School me on current CAD workstations
« on: Sat, 24 August 2013, 10:51:41 »
So I haven't been in the market for a new workstation for quite a while. My current Dell precision T7500 has a ghost in the machine and it's time to upgrade.

It's for work and its got to come from Dell per company IT policy  :thumb:

Will probably go with a fixed workstation versus a mobile one.

As far as usage details it is mostly 2D cad drawing with some 3D data with engineering calculations and modeling of data with 3rd party add-ons. And the obvious word processing, email, spreadsheets, geekhack surfing, occasional photo editing etc.

Anyone who does daily AutoCAD work or engineering type work have any recommendations?

Wish you asked this a day before. I could told you what we use at work.

Could you not just smuggle your rig in with a Dell sticker on the side?
unless they have some unforeseeable downside (like they're actually made of cream cheese cunningly disguised as ABS)

It's all good! I didn't have a need until this morning...

Well for the money we will end up spending it might be worth a shot!

At my old job, we were on dual core dells. Nothing special, just averages desktop computers with the AutoCAD program on them. They weren't bad, but they did get slow some of the time.

I didn't have anything fancy like CPT for input devices (He has a 3d Space navigator), just a keyboard and mouse.

Haha "ghost in the machine"... so many great movies based on that

But if you're looking for a good Autodesk BEAST..

Go with the 4770k.

DELID, it goes to 4.8ghz VERY stable.

Then for a workstation card, look up whatever you can afford, and save money and double that.

DO NOT get a hd7970 or a 780gtx,   there are just so many compat and compute issues when it comes to serious CAD, Maya work..

Not worth the hassle. (if you're serious) that is.

If it's under $3000 from Dell, it's still gonna suck compared to what you can put together yourself for $1500-1700

And that's the problem... corporate IT goes to Dell for everything!

UPDATE: So this is the weirdest computer 'problem' I have ever experienced. The system is still under warranty and we have now had the video card replaced 4 times well I finally got Dell to replace the monitors and now the system is working much better.

I have never heard of a monitor causing problems with a system....

Cool to see other drafters in here.

Currently my office uses dell bought systems, and out of the last batch of 10 we ordered, 4 had to have the GPU's replaced.

We 'officially' are not supposed to bring in outside computers, but the way I see it, if I just happen to swap out the HDD for an SSD and toss in my old GTX 580 in there, thats not against the rules....

our IT guy still rocks a beeper, and does not "believe" in cell phones ( whatever that means ) so in his eyes pentium 4's are still good, ( heard me talking about my home rig, he seriously asked what number pentiums they are on now, 6, 8? )

Honestly, there is no need for workstation class GPU's or massive CPU's, as Autocad only uses 2 max, and to get the most out of it you have to go in an tweak the core usage allowances, ram usage, etc. there are only about 4 people out of an office of 40 that really need half-decent machines. 2d cad work is really not demanding at all.

Most of the people at my office don't know anything about computers, and they get by just fine on their P4's since they don't know any better.

But for me, I couldn't deal with it
( thats why I have over $1k worth of computer items that i bought with my own money at my desk )
