I can't understand half of what is being said on this forum anymore. So many inside jokes it's almost like being back trying to decode /b/.

blame irc...

people can't handle the wait between replys, so they turn to irc for the instant gratification chat..

which is much more superficial, because they don't have the resolve to think a little before they write.

They engage in automatic conversation, small talk is pretty boring once you see the pattern.

See, this is an example of automatic conversation.  Harmless,  but if this is all you produce/ receive, it's quite braindead.

Though I wouldn't have expect much more from Brocrap.

Or you can choose to listen to the mindless babble from insta-responders like tp4, which contribute absolutely zero to this benefit of this forum.

What's the point of staying on topic in an off topic forum? Isn't that counter productive?

Look at the Misc. forum at Bodybuilding.com, that's how an off-topic forum should look like.

I can't understand half of what is being said on this forum anymore. So many inside jokes it's almost like being back trying to decode /b/.

Started to loose track after R00TW0RM...

Back then there were just like 2 or 3 dozen people "around" (active posters) and you "knew" most of em.
But today there are so many new faces (compare registrations now and then), it's hard to keep track.
Some build their own "circles" with their own jokes/memes, confusing at times :-\

The signal-to-noise ratio has definitely decreased (or is in increased?) recently. Keycon, IRC and Skype chat have contributed to the increased noise and I find myself having to wade through more silliness than usual.  :)

However, there are a lot of really cool stuff going on too. Things like the QFR Top Case project, Photeq's TEK-80 Case, the latest GH60 prototype in white, the t-shirt designs for the Hardcore White MX + Oktoberfest Topre [GH Anniversary Giveaway], just to name a few.

I guess what I'm saying is that although the noise has increased, there's still some really creative stuff going on if you can find the signal.

Personally, I detest threads with meaningless titles.

I particularly loathe "Simple Questions Simple Answers" which contains a great deal of valuable information buried in utter impossibility of access.

Why not make the title and content have a direct relationship?
"However, even though I was born in the Mesozoic, I do know what anyone who wants to reach out to young people should say: Billionaires took your money. They took your chance to buy a home. They took your chance at a good education. They stole your opportunities. Billionaires took the things you want in life. If you really want those things, you have to take them back.
That's the message. That's the whole message. Say that every day, not just to reach America's frustrated young white men, but people of every age, race, and gender.
Late-stage capitalism is a wealth-concentration engine, focused on vacuuming up every dollar and putting it in as few hands as possible. Republicans are helping that vacuum suck.
How does a tiny fraction of the population get away with this? They do it by dividing the other 99% of Americans against themselves."

I dunno, I think GH is a much calmer and more rational place than ever before.  Are you guys forgetting the bad old days?  Up until last year, there was one giant troll on GH that posted over 50,000 angry rants.  And 60% of the threads/ posts were about whether or not Filco keyboards made a ping sound when you typed on them.  And of course, there was the racism that he spewed.  Which was only one part of his invective.  IMO, that one dominant troll created and perpetuated an ugly atmosphere of vitriol, anger and resentment.  In fact, his pattern of abusive vituperation is still in play at that other keyboard website based in Germany, even though he has been banned over there too.

Currently, even though there are a few trolls in residence here, it's a lot better than it ever was before.  A few inside jokes are a small price to pay for a totally improved environment.  I don't like missing the inside joke either, but I find it a trifle pique when compared to what we had before.  Also I didn't realize how bad it was, until things improved.  Back then, I had no idea we could have an enjoyable geekhack.org like we do today.

EDIT:  Well, I forgot to say that there is still room for improvement, as you guys have pointed out.  But, we should all rejoice in the improvements that have been made so far.

I still don't think geekhack should allow user names like topre, keyboard, cherry, mechanical, hhkb, etc as they screw up search results when members are looking for valid information.

polluted air?
(...)Whereas back then I wrote about the tyranny of the majority, today I'd combine that with the tyranny of the minorities. These days, you have to be careful of both. They both want to control you. The first group, by making you do the same thing over and over again. The second group is indicated by the letters I get from the Vassar girls who want me to put more women's lib in The Martian Chronicles, or from blacks who want more black people in Dandelion Wine.
I say to both bunches, Whether you're a majority or minority, bug off! To hell with anybody who wants to tell me what to write. Their society breaks down into subsections of minorities who then, in effect, burn books by banning them. All this political correctness that's rampant on campuses is b.s.

I agree with this, which is why on-forum discussions should be promoted for culture building. The off-topic forum is great for that and it should be a close to un-moderated forum (nothing illegal) so actual growth in the forum can develop on the forum instead of off-the-forum. Which is why keymaster and my post should not have been edited.

Surely faking mod edits and whatnot must be against some rule here? I mean I get that it's fun to joke about, but it could be very misleading and give members who aren't "in" on it the completely wrong idea of what's going on.

It's obvious by it's placement. If someone did it faking, it would be above the line that the Report to Moderator button is on, whereas an actual edit would show up on the line with said button.
