I think that study was proven false.  That requires human interaction, which NEETs do not have.

But I couldn't find anything on the usually sites.  Then again I also didn't look very hard.  Maybe try getting one of those lamp shade things custom printed with an anime design?

I read through some of the theories and Miyazaki actually confirmed the opposite.  It was also released with Grave of the Fireflies and was intended to be a happy film because of how sad Grave was.  That way once people sat through Grave, they had Totoro to cheer them up.  Obviously some of the things add up with the theories, but I'm still sticking with totoro being a happy film.

Totoro is a happy film and I don't know why anyone would even want to think it's not, they must be crazy. Totoro is best film.
