QFR with Blacks or TK with browns?
« on: Mon, 23 September 2013, 11:28:31 »
Hello there :)

After happily clacking away on my Dell AT101W i decided that i need something for my home use as well. As i am living in a place where mechanical keyboards are not a big thing and getting one which is high quality is an issue, I narrowed my choices to QFR with Blacks and TK with Browns.

My question is (it may be a bit silly, brace yourselves): After using Black ALPS for almost half a year, which is a better option in your opinion?

I really have no way of trying and testing them both prior purchase, so I am yet again reaching out to your knowledge and experience in this topic :(

I fear that browns will be too big of a jump from hard ALPS to light springs that browns have, and would not like to go through the pain of returning item back to seller :P

Help a fellow geek decide ;-)

I am not familiar with black Alps, but QFR with MX blacks roxors! (using one to type this)
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

I've used the Black ALPS and if you are looking for an easier transfer from them to an MX switch I would suggest the QFR w/blacks. Blacks are linear and stiff (almost as stiff as Black ALPS) but move smoother.

Personally I would think if you moved to a Brown switch it would take longer to get used too. Good Luck!

QFR Black is like Dell without the bump (60g)
TK brown is like Dell with a lighter bump (45g)

You decide.

I'm using MX Blacks on the Keycool 84 and I would not advise it in my opinion what so ever, I have never used browns but they're suppose to be the 'sweet spot', but I cannot verify that I'm afraid.

I'd have to agree with Tony.

I have both dell at101 & QFR brown and I think dell is closer to brown than black.

Dell's a bit noisy (but not clicky like blue), actuation force is between brown and black and it definitely have a tactile bump like brown (unlike black).

Both Dell & Brown are pretty light so you won't get tired easily but also easier to accidentally activate if you are not careful when typing fast.

Why not try to get another Dell AT101W?

Thanks for all of the comments guys ;-)

I said to myself, why on earth shouldn't I try another switch that i don't know :) I went with MX Browns :)

I made a quick auciton search and found QFR Ultimate with MX Browns, and bought it immediately ^^

Here it is, next to new mouse fitting the theme :)

Took it to work, cause I wanted to test the switches with long typing. I must say that I fell in love with MX Browns ^^

Why not try to get another Dell AT101W?

Cause getting one in Poland is a miracle ;p I found mine and didn't see one in here again :P

To all of you wanting to switch to MX from ALPS - Go for it :) My friend bought G80-1800 with Blacks, I use MX Browns and i must say that these switches do not differ greately in terms of strenght from what ALPS have to offer :)

Thanks again to all of you :) And now, it is time to spend money on some caps xD

Good decision. Brown is always a safe bet, and I prefer brown at work and at home.

Coming from Dell AT101w, you have to learn to type lighter with the right force, just enough to register. I mean, your fingers can dance on the keyboards instead of punching the keys.
