I have a white printed HHKB on the way! It's a bit of an oddball though, a Pro 2 in a Type-S case.

Excited to drink the kool-aid, I haven't tried Topre switches or HHKB layout yet.

Congrats! Just be sure to give it time. Topre is often an acquired taste I find, many friends have given up on it too soon.

Thanks Byker, I've been wanting to try Topre for a long time now. I think I'll like them, I'm imagining them as feeling like piano keys or something.  )

I kind of wanted a RealForce 87, but I have too many TKLs, and the HHKB can have Hasu's controller.. programmability is a big plus for me!

It's going to be a long wait waiting for it to get here. Now I just need to get my hands on a Topre Bro Gamer Set.. soo nice.

this thing does need an aftermarket controller, in my opinion.
the flexibility of a programmable controller is just needed to make good use of a small keyboard like this.
besides, i think the stock Fn layer is pretty stupid, and the Fn key is positioned poorly, relative to the design of the Fn layer..

gotta say though, that this is the only keyboard i've ever owned that i'd actually call fun.
blank caps and hasu's controller; it's just so much fun to play around the layout and not ever having legends that are 'wrong'.
at first, i was thinking of going for the JP and then use something like AutoHotKey, but i'm glad i learned of hasu's controller and went with the blank HHKB : )

wouldn't a modded regular HHKB have a shorter throw than a Type-S as the sliders in the Type-S are longer to allow for o-ring clearance. I know that it is only a small difference, but, still a difference in the key stroke.

I usually use my right pinky to hold the fn key then use my index finger on the arrow key I want.

If your hands are to big, maybe using your right ring finger for the fn could be more comfortable.

That is the case on the Japanese version, other than that, you'd have to use some software remapping or Hasu's controller.

Yeah, ironing the Elite Keyboards landing pads makes the distance pretty much negligible, basically the thickness of paper (there's a topic about it on the Keyboards subforum, except it's labeled as an FC660C silencing mod).  It takes some effort to actually do it right but it's worthwhile.  I have a type-s but I applied the mod to a realforce and in hindsight I could have just saved the money by buying a regular HHKB.  Oh well.

I do have a desk mat though, so that might give the same effect.

Silencing could be the difference between being able to use it outside of home, and not. I'll do a test run to see if I get any complaints, but I can see how it would be annoying to have a loud keyboard typing while everyone else is quietly writing notes. I'm the only person in my classes right now who likes to type notes.  )

I'm not COMPLAINING about anyone silencing it. Stock HHKB is quieter than your standard, rattly cheap RD is all I'm saying. I would not be concerned about using it in an office environment.

I tried using my stock 45g HHKB in the office before. And even when I'm in my own room, I somehow feel that the noise is a bit much when I'm doing some heavy typing but maybe it's just me.

Since then I've been alternating between my Type-S and 55g silenced one.

I think it really depends on the context. In my office, I find that the difference between my Type Heaven and my coworkers' Dell or whatever is pretty minimal. In a classroom where everyone else is just listening to the lecture and writing notes by hand, I could see even a fairly quiet keyboard being a nuisance. Myself, I prefer to focus in and maybe handwrite a few selected notes, myself, vs trying to get everything down typing.

With the type-s I have noticed that the upstroke is softened. As a result, this makes the next key press feel like it requires lesser effort. I've owned a HHKB pro 2 in the past, and I felt typing required to much force. With the type-s the force required to press a key down seems like less.

It affects travel distance less than landing pads and dental bands. I have no idea why it's so expensive, but it's much cheaper than a $60 price difference between the Type S and regular

Not by much .40 a ring on Ebay. I was just curious about it was looking to silence my RF87 I was thinking that it was pretty steep.

I'd be surprised if they were noticeably thinner than ironed landing pads which can be had for much less money.  Of course, the trade-off with the ironed pads is that you have to spend more time/effort on the process.

According to PFU, key travel on the standard HHKB is 4mm and 3.8mm on the Type-S. I interpret that to mean there is no difference in the sliders or case and that the factory foam rings are .2mm thick. I could be wrong with my assumption. But the key travels are listed on their website.

Silencing doesn't remove the thock of the downstroke, just quiets the higher pitched clack of the upstroke.  Unless I've been wrong this whole time and people consider the topre thock to be the upstroke sound.

I always find that the transition back to other boards is actually the hard part - especially with backspace

Took me probably two days of use to get to the layout. It takes probably less than a minute of typing to get used to changed backspace/ control, but I do prefer the HHKB's layout overall.
