Got my RF 87U 10AE 55g

Not sure I like the heavier keys need to play a bit more, but do love the blue keycaps. May have to transplant them onto my HHKB

(Attachment Link)

yep. I didn't expect the keypress to be so heavy too. I'm actually trying to sell mine to get the 45g. Part of me wants to keep it because it's the finest board I"ve owned.

I'd still take HHKB though  :) :)

I came to HHKB from a Cherry board that was supposedly the same actuation weight (45g), and the Topre switches definitely felt like a harder keypress -- I guess because the resistance is all at the top. I've come to love it, but it was a lot at first.

This is definitely what it is. I love typing on it but my pinky and ring finger feel the strain after typing for short bursts. This is mainly because I've done a lot of typing over my years and have had repeated bouts of mild RSI so I'm trying to avoid it and am not using it at the moment.

I'm definitely getting the 45g RF because I'm needing it for my job.

Coming from cherry browns, I'm experiencing exactly this currently. The keys also spring back up with more force. I tried browns after a few days on the HHKB, and they felt so light!

The typing experience on the HHKB is addictive, but I think I am still in the adjustment period. I also recently started training myself to use the correct fingers and  placements when typing (I very rarely used my right pinkie and ring finger), so it adds to the slight fatigue on my right fingers.

Oh yeah. It took me a few weeks to get used to the feel and the layout. Now, honestly, the FN layer and arrows are second nature and it feels very natural to just keep my hands on the home row all the time. I still have to look to get PgUp and PgDn and Home and End right, but hopefully at some point those become second nature as well.

The only time I really miss being able to use F keys and arrows with one hand is when I'm casually browsing and using one hand to hold a drink or something (well away from the keyboard, duh) and I'd like to quickly do a page down or something. But otherwise, I couldn't be happier with this thing.

I just checked and I don't use my pinkie for the delete. I actually shift my right hand across and use the finger next to my pinkie to delete.
I also switch the delete key to backspace.
But I do love Control being in the proper place on the keyboard.

have you considered hasu's controller? it makes the thing programmable.
i wouldn't even have considered buying the hhkb if it wasn't for hasu's controller..

What was your motivation for getting HHKB Pro 2 + Hasu over the RF87 or FC660C? I'm having similar difficulties with the lack of arrow cluster on mine, but I'm thinking it'd be best to go to something that has dedicated arrows. Well, actually, I do have the RF87U 55G locked in on Massdrop, so it's happening one way or another at this point, just curious as to why you (and many others) go down the Hasu path.

I'm actually looking for specific reasons. Why buy something that doesn't work for you out of the box and requires a controller to modify the layout? Is it that the overall layout is good, but just a few small tweaks are needed? Is it that the HHKB has the portability advantage and that matters more? The lack of dedicated arrow keys isn't something the Hasu can directly address.

I'll give you a similar situation. Since I've owned my Filco for 4 years, perhaps one day I'd get The Pegasus Hoof so I could change things up. However, if I were buying a brand new board, I would get the KUL, which has dip switches to change some commonly requested configurations, rather than Filco+Pegasus.

How long have you had it?  It took me a while to get used to the arrow keys to the point that I actually thought about going back to a TKL, but after enough time it became second-nature.  I guess it depends on how often you use them as to how fast you'll adapt.

I agree with a_ak57. When I first got my HHKB Pro 2, it was very easy to adjust to the new positions of Backspace and Ctrl. The arrow keys took a bit longer, and I experimented with alternative mappings, such as ijkl and wasd, but I quickly found that the default cursor diamond, [;'/ was the way to go. Now, it is so ingrained that I use this mapping on all my other keyboards. So, for me, tools such as the hasu controller, hasu converter, Xwhatsit controller, and Soarer converter would not be for the HHKB, but rather to convert other keyboards to the HHKB layout. Nevertheless, for those who bought the HHKB for reasons other than the layout, it is good that an alternative controller exists.

Without Hasu's Controller, i wouldn use HHKB as my only main keyboard
Few programs/games need arrow clusters without using fn+
Being programmable doesnt mean you attempt to modify entirely the original layout but it let users to use keyboards under some specific situations

I've had the HHKB for ~2 or 3 weeks now, maybe a little less. I can't go back to MX. Built a B.Face with 65g Zealios before the HHKB arrived, which I thought I loved, but after typing on this beauty I don't know anything anymore. I never realized it before now, but the HHKB's placement of backspace is the best thing ever.

I want to buy a Type-S now though, I think the B.Face will be used to fund my Type-S :(

Perhaps I'm a little more set in my ways than most but it took me a good couple of months to fully adjust to my HHKB. For a long time I would have to look down at the board to find the Fn key and even then I'd occasionally press Return or L by mistake when trying to activate the arrow keys.

Now that I've adjusted, using the Fn layer arrow keys is automatic and I don't even have to think about it.
May all your key presses strike true.

I actually slightly prefer my B.face with ergo clears over my HHKB Type-S. That said, I do still love my HHKB and I use it every day at work. I reprogrammed my arrows/nav cluster/backspace on my B.face to be in the same locations as the HHKB.

pls send help. Deciding on 55g mod, or Type-S, (or if I really hate myself, and is possible, Type-S with 55g mod) is killing me slowly.

Switches: Silenced 55g and 45g Topre; IBM capacitive buckling spring (Model F); Brown Alps; White Alps; Matias Click; Hi-Tek Space Invader Black (Clicky) or White (Tactile).

Form Factor: 60% and TKL.

Layout: HHKB.

Recently, I decided to try the KC60 with mx greens, which I programmed to a HHKB layout, but any type of Cherry mx is my least favorite switch. Nevertheless, I think I would like to try purple Zealio 65g and possibly Ergo clears.

Of the boards I currently own, my favorites are:

Silenced and lubed RF87UB55; Silenced and lubed HHKB Pro 2 Black with 55g domes. However, I like the same boards with silenced and lubed 45g switches almost as much. I like these better than my Type-S, mostly because I have not lubed it, and I much prefer the black case to the white case. I also use blank black mods and spacebar with blue alphnumeric keys.

Oh wow, your boards sound amazing, any pics of the blue alphanumeric HHKB?

I agree with you on pretty much everything. Form factor, 60% is quickly becoming my favorite. I missed my desk space. Layout, HHKB is winning me over so much. When I go back to my B.face, I always hit backslash instead of backspace. HHKB's backspace is honestly in the best position ever.

Switches: I've only tried the 45g Topre, and buckling spring out of that list. Buckling Spring feels nice but it's much too loud for me, same reason I couldn't get behind blues, except multiplied. I REALLY like the Zealios out of all the cherry switches I've tried (again, no ergo clears). But again, I also now find them underwhelming now that I've been typing on topre switches. Like, criminally underwhelming. They are fantastic MX switches, but I think I'm leaving the MX world.

Topre's 45g feels perfectly heavy, much heavier than any 45g rated MX switch if that makes any sense. I like it, but I'm on the fence about doing the 55g mod, because this almost feels perfect and 55 might be too much?

My next goal is a Type-S, but I also much prefer black to the white cases. White seems out of place on my desk, which makes me sad because there's no black Type-S.

On that note, I see some people doing the silence mod, how does that compare to the Type-S?

the blue one he has is so beautiful it almost made me cry when I first saw it. I don't think that set is being sold anymore, especially since it's topre.

Hypersphere, keep the rings coming bro  :)  I think i'll be broke by this time next year.

Now I want to see it even more!

On a side note, I knew the silence mod rings thing were called Hypersphere or something of the sort, didn't realize I was actually talking to the person that made them! lol

I want to try the ring silencing. I've heard sound tests on youtube, and it tickles my fancy quite a bit.

@derb2k2: Thanks for the kind words!

@Oxid: See below for a pic of my HHKB Pro 2 with blue caps. This is one of the variants that has off-white arrow keys and a red Esc. At other times, I have all the alphanumerics in blue and an added red Fn key.

I don't feel comfortable promoting my own product, but I have to admit that I do like the sound and feel of my HHKB with my Silencing Rings and lube better than the sound and feel of my Type-S. My preference is also biased in favor of the black case.

ha yes it's Hyper. He made those rings for topre switch boards.

It might be a bit tedious when you first do it but it's fun taking apart a keyboard and modifying it. I recently put rings and lubed a realforce (which I sold) and the silencing was great.

The 1 thing that I hate when opening topre board is when you are finished modding it you need to assemble the conic springs and the rubber dome and that is really hard to do cause if you fail your board will have a really loud spring sound and that bothered the hell out of me and I have to open the board 1 more times to fix it

Unrelated to everything:

This ****head is selling a couple PBT spacebars on eBay for $30. UnREAL. $30. Of course the price has to be insane when I finally find a white one.

BTW I hope that guy on GH and sees this message.

happened my first time lubing my HHKB. I was already screwing in the case screws. I learned to test every key after putting the PCB.  :D :D
