Well, I spent the weekend adjusting to the HHKB layout and now that I'm at work on my MX Blacks and I find myself typing "\" instead of "backspace" and I'm not enjoying the feel of the stiff linear as much...

I'm still having trouble adjusting to the control being where the caps was as well as the FN key as the smallest I have had was a TKL until the Pro 2.

I hope this HHKB doesn't ruin my love for other MX switches as I still have so much to try.

Topre grows on you man... there is no way back. Be prepared! Control / FN will get in your muscle memory soon enough.

Just got my very first topre in the form of this HHKB Pro 2. I bought this one used from a redditor who swapped out the caps from a black pro 1 onto this board.

I'm definitely having some trouble adjusting to the layout but already liking the feel. Seller did mention that this was an almost new board and feels a bit "mushier" than his old pro 1 which feels crisp.

Does anyone else feel that way? I'm wondering how the springs will change over time if at all.

(Attachment Link)
Damn I love the look of the white body and black keys! I have some variation in "crispness' between a few keys on my HHKB but I have learned to adjust. Hoping lubing will help make all the keys feel more uniform.

I will not convert so easily! You HHKB'ers are like a damn cult! (Although I can kind of see why) LOL

BTW, there is a gentleman on reddit who is selling his HHKB that was hydrodipped and I think it's by far the most ingenious idea I've ever seen. Considering the amount of work and mods he's done the price isn't bad either.

I may have to go out and look for some services.

Well I figured the Novatouch mod and Hasu Bluetooth will account for an extra $200 in itself so if you were looking to do all those anyway it's not a bad deal.

Topre has definitely caught my attention, and it'll be my main board at home for the next month while I try to adjust to the layout. I'm getting the Planck from MD that just ended in June (I think?) so that's when I'll have a go at some 65g zealios. We'll see how MX will hold up after I've put some real hours into the HHKB.

I have to say I'm *slowly* warming up to the idea of purchasing a HHKB.  I've been imagining a key right next to my shift and playing make believe of all the hand movements I would need to get my stuff done.

My biggest concern is the noise of the stock board.  I don't want to spend the money/time/void warranty of adding o-rings.

Yeah I know it's a very custom unique board - but it might sit better at $175ish for a HHKB and $250 ish for a type-S with option to buy a black Type-S; or at least sell different color shells like on the KUL.

What switches are you currently accustomed to using? My daily used to be MX Blues with o-rings, and the HHKB was much quieter. There's a good chance Topre is quieter than whatever switch you are currently using.

Gotta be honest it's quieter than most the other boards i own even at stock though the little noise it gives off i find relaxing, personally i don't find it any louder than some of the membranes i hear used when typing at full speed.  I'll be uploading a sound profile video of the HHKB stock on my Youtube channel within the next day or so though typing at varying WPM speeds since i seem to have forgot to do one for the HHKB.

I honestly believe that my KUL ES-87 with Clears is quieter than my HHKB. HHKB is really quiet though, but I find the spacebar so noisy, both on my HHKB as well as on my 87U 55g.

Coming from years of MX blacks I can say the sound of a non silenced hhkb sounds significantly more muted. I'm not even a Topreology nut but the bottoming out of a regular mx key sounds "harsher" and there is a certain pleasantness to the thock that the hhkb produces.

Just do what I did and buy a used one to try it out. HHKB's are generally an easy resale so I don't really see it as a risk of $$$.

Tried to force myself to use my pok3r with MX Blues today at my desktop for awhile....

The layout felt very alien on the pok3r compared to the HHKB

The MX Blues while not horrible did not feel nearly as good as i remember them...they felt almost cheap and plasticky when the tactile click occurred compared to the bump on the Topre....

Definitely totally hooked to the HHKB and Topre switches in general.  I still use the pok3r in short bursts for travel with my iPad but never at my desktop anymore...man oh man did it make me appreciate my HHKB and then some.

I have been admiring the HHKB from a distance, but I am proud to say that I'm about to join your ranks. I have settled on the white model. Now I need your infinite wisdom on whether to buy lettered or blank keys. Why is this so difficult?

Blanks look so clean...and on most keyboards Full/TKL i would say go for the blanks and be done with it.  However 60% boards...even MORE so the HHKB have such a custom different function layer of where everything is it may not be such a good idea unless you never plan to use those function layers or can memorize them fairly quickly.  Even though i touch type i doubt i could ever memorize the function layer of the HHKB and as such went for printed Black keycaps myself since they still look clean but i can see the function layer when and if i need to.

You've got a good point. Maybe I will start with printed caps until I learn the function layer and impulse buy some blanks later.

IMO I think the white looks better with legends and the black looks better blank, but that's just my opinion.

I started out with a Type-S with lettered keycaps. Later on I got blank caps (white/grey), and I slightly prefer how it looks now. I think. Maybe it's a good idea to order the caps together with the keyboard at once, so you won't have to pay for shipping twice :)

At some point I'll have to swap the blank caps of the two boards I have - I kind of like the looks of a white keyboard with blank black caps too.

Mmm, it's a personal preference really. Blanks are cool if you know that you'll learn the FN layer fast. Or if you're getting an Hasu controller with it so the FN layer would be designed by yourself. I like the stealth black on black caps but if I would go with white then blanks. With or without lettering - HHKB looks awesome either way!

Hi there.

Go blank. Looks better, forces you to memorize. In all honesty, took me 2 weeks to get diamond navigation properly in muscle memory. Not that hard, but takes some time before it becomes effortless.

IMO I think the white looks better with legends and the black looks better blank, but that's just my opinion.

Funny for me it is the complete opposite. Black on gray has a darth vader look to it, while black on white lettered caps just look cheap to me.

This pictures shows a distinct absence of HHKB Pro 2 Love.

It should not be in this thread.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

The only issue i have its when i want to type some passwords, i am so damn slow and make many keystroke mistakes
Gaming might be in trouble aswell if you bind some keys

I can see that being an issue. I am a touch typist, so I almost never look down. Except sometimes for symbols on the number keys. But when I'm really lost, I'll just do trial-and-error.

But I suppose you would get used to it fast enough. Gaming as well.. Well.. I don't play starcraft or dota or whatever, so FPS is relatively simple: shift + ctrl etc you can see by the size of the key. Ans wasd + z (for ducking or crouch) is easy to remember.

My lube and Hypersphere silencing rings came in the mail today. Any last words before I rip my baby open for the first time?

Doing this mod the first time, I was reluctant (scared) to pop the sliders out and didn't know how to do it. Taking a flathead to the corner with a little pressure works great.

Also be careful when you put the sliders back in as they will fit in the wrong way just fine. But this will put the inside groves of the slider pointing east/west and you won't be able to fit your caps back on.

In the middle of the mod now and this tip really helped! It's working a lot better and feeling a lot safer than other tips I've read. Will report back soon.

I've seen some photos of HHKBs with pink caps (look like they come from a RealForce). Is it possible to find these now, or have they long gone? They look so nice.

Mod complete! It feels really really good! Hypersphere's rings are the real deal. The tactility of the *bump* is still there and I can feel no difference in actuation. And boy is this puppy quiet now! A total night and day difference. The HVAC in my office is already kind of loud so the stock thock was never an issue. But now I can hardly hear the thing. But I can still *feel* it.

Used Superlube oil for the slider rails and some extra thick lube on the stabs which I had lying around for my arcade stick. The stabilized keys feel really nice now and just as smooth as their unstabilized counterparts. I didn't put landing pads on the spacebar since sound wasn't a huge issue for me. Lubing seems to have helped it a lot though.

The entire mod took around 2 hours to complete and I think anybody with a little bit of experience opening things up and putting them back together can definitely achieve this mod. It wasn't scary at all. Though some parts did take a little bit of patience and care. That said, I wouldn't want to do this again anytime soon, but I think I will do this myself again rather than shelling out the extra dough for a Type-S.

Next on my list is getting a PBT spacebar. Anybody know a reliable place I can get one? Also if anybody who is interested in this mod has any questions, I'd be more than happy to answer.

Nice to hear! Really really thinking hard about doing some kind of silencing mod on mine and I want to get Hypersphere's but they're so damn expensive.

If you find a reliable place for the PBT spacebars, please, PM me.

I'd be interested in seriously good Topre PBT spacebars as well. I really do not want to buy a realforce 104 around my spacebar from massdrop for this. Just the bars.

The stock HHKB spacebar is probably the nicest ABS cap I have ever used, and I honestly have no qualms about it. At this point I'm just trying to pimp this thing out as much as I can. Except for 55g domes. I have small man hands and 45g is more than heavy for me. Gotta draw the line somewhere.
