Took my car the the car doctor for a timing chain change. My car will be leaving the car doctor with a new engine.
****. 5000 Australian dolleriedoos down the outhouse.
What's that is standard currency units?
What happened? Did the timing issue go on for too long and cause something to crack or break?
It would be about 3700 USD I think.
Nah something to do with corrosion inside the engine requiring it to be pulled to pieces and reconditioned. So this would cost more than just putting a new engine in so I went with that option. Timing chain on its own was quoted at about 1600-1800 AUD and that was if it didn't need new I think they are called tensioners and all the other stuff.
Because I moved state, the inspection standards are quite high to transfer registration and this is the problem. Whereas once you are registered in this state, they don't care until you sell.
The timing chain skipped on my 1995 Maxima after about 250k miles. It of course messed up the engine. I had it for 10 years so I was okay with the idea it was time for something new. I'm surprised you had them replace the engine! Timing chains are so much better then belts, but when things go wrong, they really go wrong.
Yeah, I was going to get a new car but I decided I need to buy a house so this was the cheapest option in the short term that would allow me to still buy some property.
Besides my car was made in 06 so although it is old af, it still is comfy as **** and I do like it.
Edit: oh and if I didn't get a new engine, the car would have been worthless and it would go straight to the wreckers probably for free. Whereas this way in the next two years I can probably recover maybe 4000 in resale. The other factor is that my car has about 225 000 KMs, the new engine has only done 130 000 so it should extend it out a bit longer.
