I feel like the local post office is actually one of the best I've dealt with,

I agree. My local Post Office does an outstanding job for me.

Mine does too.  I feel like it's highly contingent upon the post office though.  Some of my local ones are awesome, some are awful.

The closest post office to me is about 2 minutes away, but they wont take packages if they can't be delivered. This means my packages either go to the post office 20 minutes away where  I can't get there after work or the post office 10 minutes away where I can get there after work but can't get a parking spot before they close. It annoys me that the post office 2 minutes away from me can refuse to take my packages but I guess that is what you get in Australia where I believe it is a franchise system (not sure though). I guess in the end it works against them as if I have to post something I purposely skip the post office 2 minutes away and take my business to the post office 10 minutes away.

Yeah I'm pretty sure auspost use a mixture of company owned and franchised stores - the annoying thing for me is that they seem to alternate between 2 post offices as to where they leave my packages so sometimes I have to make trips to 2 separate post offices to collect my mail eurgh

What surprised me the other day was finding out that Startrack Express is owned by AusPost!

Well,  clearly they don't need your business if they refuse your packages..

gg tp, gg. I don't think they get money for taking the packages once contracted delivery fails but they do get money from me posting my stuff out. To be honest the owner is an old lady that looks like she just don't care, I bet she is simply waiting out retirement. I have a feeling once she goes they will shut down that particular location.

the annoying thing for me is that they seem to alternate between 2 post offices as to where they leave my packages so sometimes I have to make trips to 2 separate post offices to collect my mail eurgh

Exact same situation here, yet I rarely get two packages at the same time.

What surprised me the other day was finding out that Startrack Express is owned by AusPost!

Startrack is a leader in providing some of the most stupid and incompetent delivery people throughout Australia, finally I understand why. The best thing we ever did at work was get rid of Startack and bring in Mr Fox.

You had that AusPost thing where an ExpressPost bag (guaranteed next day delivery between capital cities) takes two days to arrive?

When you complain they say it was delivered to a "distribution centre" or something like that, and won't give you a free bag that you're supposed to get if it is late.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Interesting, I didn't know they had any link to auspost at all. Never heard of Mr Fox, but I've always been really impressed with startrack's speed and have never had a damaged parcel or any other issues with them. I must be really lucky :)).

I would highly recommend opening up a parcel locker account from auspost though. They're available 24/7 and have saved me the effort of waiting in the PO line or missing a package because of uni. And they're free too :)

Yeah I've always had really good experiences with StarTrack, that's what made me assume they were private to be honest. The only other company that I think I've dealt with may have been TNT, idk, there would be a lot more private couriers in the cities though, some of those they can't compete with because they have same day delivery or within 3 hours.

Mr Fox is Linfox, I just call it Mr Fox. Service probably varies depending on location and contractor.

Ohhh yeah I don't think I've ever had them deliver anything (do they deliver to homes, or is it just businesses?) but I have seen some of their trucks when driving interstate

I don't believe they deliver to houses, I may be wrong but pretty sure they only do bulk logistics to designated locations. It is a massive company though.

Bought a bracelet for my brother for his birthday from America, cost me $40. Cost me $25 INTL shipping. It arrived in about 7 working days, and the sticker on the bubble mailer said $7.90 shipping paid.

So that pissed me off, so I sent him an email asking for a refund of $15 taking into account his material cost and whatever. He sent me an email back saying that's his standard price for INTL shipping, because he has to "physically go to the post office and fill in a customs form".

On the form he put: "Tie" and under value he put $10. What a ****ing liberty. I'm tired of being ****ed over on INTL shipping.

I don't even understand how hard it is to ship international. He must value his time a lot more than I do, because that trip to the post office must have been hell for him for charging $17. I ship INTL all the time, and it's ****ing nothing to just go to the post office and scribble on a bit of ****ing paper.

He probably just wants to charge an unreasonable sum for profits. It's not hard at all and frankly I'm all about filling out custom forms.

Or maybe he just charges $17 so he can go get some fast food on the way. Genius!

This is why I don't ship international. Too much of a hassle.

Unfortunately I am about to get to that same place.

Just sending a size "medium" T-shirt in a large envelope to England recently cost me $17!

And for a keyboard, considering that tracking probably doesn't work, and ebay makes sellers responsible for everything, the cost and risk just get prohibitive.
"However, even though I was born in the Mesozoic, I do know what anyone who wants to reach out to young people should say: Billionaires took your money. They took your chance to buy a home. They took your chance at a good education. They stole your opportunities. Billionaires took the things you want in life. If you really want those things, you have to take them back.
That's the message. That's the whole message. Say that every day, not just to reach America's frustrated young white men, but people of every age, race, and gender.
Late-stage capitalism is a wealth-concentration engine, focused on vacuuming up every dollar and putting it in as few hands as possible. Republicans are helping that vacuum suck.
How does a tiny fraction of the population get away with this? They do it by dividing the other 99% of Americans against themselves."

It's for my brother, but yeah, I think it's silly.

But provided you tell people you are shipping to what the price is, then what's the issue? If they are going to pay that money, and you aren't losing any money, I don't see what the problem is? You can find out how much it will cost online before you go to the PO, then get your payment, then go out so you don't have to go out twice. I really don't see the pain.

I don't understand why shipping international is an issue for anyone, yeah it costs more but as long as the person accepts this fact what's the issue? Your still going to the post office anyway most of the time and if the person buying the item is paying anyway, what's the issue?

A USPS account is completely free and you can print postage with declarations paperwork online. It isn't any more inconvenient than shipping domestic.

I don't understand why shipping international is an issue for anyone, yeah it costs more but as long as the person accepts this fact what's the issue? Your still going to the post office anyway most of the time and if the person buying the item is paying anyway, what's the issue?

**** people who are CONUS only.

Well there are legitimate reasons why people have issues shipping INTL. Most people just don't want to **** with a customs form. Like I normally print one off via Paypal, no issue.  I imagine people who don't have access to a printer or don't even know exactly how customs forms work don't want to deal with it. There are many personal factors, as well as location and service.

So as much as I personally don't think it's a big deal, it might be for someone else. If someone doesn't ship INTL, you could get a proxy or just miss out on that item. I just wouldn't be so quick to judge all the people who ship CONUS-only.

I don't know it think it's silly not to ship internationally as well like unless your post office is hell the customs forms are literally three boxes you scribble some barely illegible text into and nod at the cashier whilst throwing a sweating £8 composed of mainly 10p (just me?)

But seriously I need to start discriminating and saying UK only on everything I sell

But provided you tell people you are shipping to what the price is, then what's the issue? If they are going to pay that money, and you aren't losing any money,

The "original" money is not a problem, as long as the buyer accepts the cost.

My fear is what happens with problems. Let's say that I sell you a keyboard for $100 + $78 shipping to the UK. And with your customs, etc, you feel that you are buying something pretty precious.

Personally, I believe that if I have properly packaged and properly addressed the item that you bought, as soon as I hand it to the postal clerk and pay the tab, it has become "yours" and I can take no further responsibility for it since it is literally and figuratively out of my hands forever.

However, what buyers often expect, and what ebay makes explicit, is that the responsibility remains on ME until the item is placed into your sweaty hands in perfect condition.

So, if someone nabs it off your doorstep, I lose.

If it is set on the wrong doorstep, I lose.

If it falls of the truck into a drainage ditch, I lose.

If the truck rolls over it, I lose.

Even if it actually arrives at your house in perfect condition but you claim that it was damaged, I lose.

In the domestic US, despite the horror stories people love to re-tell, properly packaged items are rarely damaged, and tracking is usually accurate, if slow.

Given that, I feel that the risks I take on domestic sales are manageable, but the risks incurred when fragile items are sent out of country, with complete loss of control and considerably greater expenses for things like return shipping, it becomes seriously worrisome.

Mind you, I have sold hundreds of items internationally, over the course of nearly 2 decades, many of them fragile items such as rare LP records and keyboards, with a problem rate only in the 2%-5% range, but still, I have become resentful of the concept that I have to take responsibility for both the item itself as well as all the costs and risks associated with the shipping and delivery of it, even long after it has left my control forever.

My two kids are rehearsing for The Nutcracker. It is once a week for an hour. By all accounts this means I should be having some nice quite time as I sit here in the studio and they are in class. Only, as it turns out the studio shares the building with a Spanish church which runs at the same time. They sing extremely loudly and not very well. This seems to annoy the dance studio owner who is now doing her level best to be equally loud.

I can't even explain the overwhelming din I'm currently encased in.

Yeah, true, if you live in butt-**** nowhere square state, and you have no printer, then I understand, but this guy is based out of Jersey City, so I'm guessing it wasn't an arduous journey to the Post Office. And if you are trying to run a business, it's in your best interest to not screw over your customers. I understand why people say CONUS only, but I think the arduous process you have to go through to ship internationally has been greatly exaggerated.

well if it makes you feel any better I saw a video that takes a really good look at it and it looks kinda crappy. I'd much rather have the fallout 3 pipboy alarm clock.

woah, I actually just sniped one on bestbuy.ca... now your comment is making me question my choice lol. I guess I can always just throw it on craigslist and make $100 or whatever.
