ErgoDox: travel case (?)
« on: Sat, 09 November 2013, 17:27:04 »
I've been carrying my ergodox to school and conferences for a while, because it's sooo great, isn't it? I don't want to damage neither the keyboard, nor my backpack though, and bubble doesn't last forever and looks ugly. Therefore, I've been looking for a case.

So far, I've only found out that the Beyerdynamic DT-bag has perfect size (26×23×12 cm) to fit the ergodox w/ classic case, a trackball and an AC adapter for my thinkpad. It just needs a different padding, but it's a bit too expensive for that.

Any other ideas? I'd try to update the OP eventually.

Just a heads up.. the TRRS sockets that was part of the group buy don't seem to be very high quality.

I have 2 doxes, and out of 4 sockets, 2 broke over time..  and I've only unplugged it a few times.

So... consider *NOT unplugging too much..

The usb is going strong.

I haven't had a problem with either of mine. I've swapped them several times, traveled with my classic case, and the TRRS's are still going strong. (knock on wood)

i think my trrs connection was more on the DOA side rather than wear/tear... the plate strips inside must not have been crimped well, and so after a while, it catches on the cable and bent..

I guess I'm gonna try a cheap shoe travel case ($13 @ eBay) first.

Any suggestions on this topic? The DT-Bag looks like a great idea.

Would it work to cut some foam to the size of the bag then cut a smaller layer between the Ergodox halves? (Like this:)

----Ergodox----

----Ergodox----
-------------------

I can see cabling being an issue with that since it doesn't have any pockets.

Here's what the inside looks like:
Das Ultimate - Blues - Converted to removable USB (Mimic-Cables) - 40 A-L WASD ORings
ErgoDox - ErgoClears ErgoDox - 65g Blues

A small update: I've recently bought a brand new neoprene 15.6" laptop "case" for €2 locally. The two ErgoDox halves just fit inside next to each other, and the case can be folded then.

Get yourself a nice Pelican case. You can feel like you're unloading expensive military gear every time you open it.  :D
