Help! I mixed up my keys
« on: Wed, 11 December 2013, 17:44:28 »
I removed the keys on my filco majestouch 2 today and cleaned it. I assumed that all square keys where the same size/shape, so mixed all the keys together. Furthermore I use blank keys. Now that I try to put them back I notice that they are all shaped slightly different, and I don't know which keys go where. I sorted all square keys into four categories: flat, slight backward tilt, backward tilt, slight forward tilt. Are there only four types of keys or are there differences I missed? Anyone know which group of keys is supposed to sit on which row?

"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Take a picture of the four groups, from the side, next to each other, and I'll tell you where they go.

Thanks everyone. I looked on the inside of the keys and there are row numbers and then ordinary numbers (e.g R3 and underneath it 13). I saw this post which looked really helpful, but I have a different keyboard layout. I have 13 keys in row 1 of the "main area" of the keyboard, while the keyboard in the link has 12 (hope that makes sense). Anyone know if there is a similar diagrams for other layouts?

Edit: my keyboard is 105 key layout, the diagram in the link is 104 key layout.

Yes, epic fail. The keyboard came assembled. Anyway put on all the keys by looking at row number and it looks okay  :thumb:.

The keys of the same size in each row should be interchangeable :) Just watch out for little nubs or scoops on the F and J keys, and the numpad 5 key might have a nub or marking as well. If your keys are the same as some of my old blank sets, F, J and 5 on the numpad are Row 2.
