I regularly post on /r/mechanicalkeyboards but lately it's been lame, people are too critical and speak with upvotes/downvotes rather than forming a dialogue.

Surprisingly to some here ripster actually made it entertaining, without his posts it's kind of meh.

Anyway, will be posting more pics and stuff here instead.

More of a stable community here, which seems more fitting for me atm. Not that it's an either/or decision.

Yeah, if upvotes and downvotes bother you, reddit isn't for you.

Kind of does, I over-analyze everything so I question why some get upvoted while others don't. It's meaningless but it seems to be the focus for me more often than I'd like it to be.

Popularity contests appeal to a certain groups...   And this is usually a group that's terribly insecure and in a state of persistent turmoil over whether or not they're liked..

Not a difficult bunch to get along with, but I find them quite tedious.. their incessant need for external affirmation

I don't mind the actual reddit system, it's just mechanicalkeyboards has such **** content. It's all recycled posts of stock boards, nothing interesting and rarely any thought provoking discussions or projects.

i've been posting less and less on reddit since becoming more active on geekhack. after being there for a while, it's just a bunch of people asking the same questions repeatedly without checking the sidebar. i think /r/mechanicalkeyboards is a great hub for beginners just getting started, while geekhack is the next step imo.

I don't think vampires are cool...  feeding on blood? that's so pathetic..   Terminators on the other hand..

Vampires would so lose to terminators..

You might have like 1000 elite vampires that could handle a few terminators.. but those vampires have to be super-old to get that powerful..

you can build terminators any time, and in innumerable quantities...   Terminators beats Vampires any day..

Isn't that for almost every subreddit the same? Because of it's system there are every day the same questions, double, triple, quadruple posts and up- and down votes based on the daily mood of it's users.

What i like are the funny MS Paint images of lots of sub-reddits. The crossed Cheetos logo of r/mechanicalkeyboards is just great. The Bitcoin subreddit logo is a wizzard with the text 'magic internet money'.

It pretty much is, unfortunately... I mean there is a huge sign that says "CHECK SIDEBAR" how hard can it be?! I appreciate newbies who do a little research of their own rather than those that need to be spoonfed everything :p

Reddit's concept of an upvote / downvote system works well to keep relevant posts up at the top and the forum offers some flexibility based on how you want to view the posts. IMO better than the typical forum style of newer posts tacked on to the end of a thread, forcing you have to sift though pages of and pages of a thread to find relevant info as the search functionality is advanced. But maybe this is just the limited capability of SMF.
However this is not an ideal world, so reddit's voting system is and often skewed for both good and bad.
I also find it more convenient that all the content of a specific reddit thread is within a single continuous page opposed to clicking on pages and pages of a specific GH thread.
While I prefer reddit for the overall functionality, I still prefer GH for the content.
That said, I think forum designs will continue to improve on both user experience and ease of use.
This sh1t is essentially free for us to use, yet we love to complain, first-world problems right?

I never sort Reddit posts by relevance because of the votes. As in real life the interesting things are very often not the ones the masses love. I sort posts by date, that works for me.

I think the more complex posts I have seen on reddit are the ones made by GH members like matt3o when he was showing off his custom keyboards. While I don't mind reddit at all I also want to experience the more advanced stuff that goes beyond standart keyboards and WASD keyboard keycaps. That's why I visit GH.

QFT. The most interesting content is usually just x-posted from GH or DT by people, who are members of everything.

I went there today and browsed a week of posts. Nothing interesting caught my eye. Well, except a bunch of guys trying to describe black Alps in Dell AT101, although they had literally no idea about the switch (linear? clicky? huh?), and someone convinced that thick Cherry keycaps were SP's DCS.

/r/mechanicalkeyboards suffers the same fate of many subreddits: There's a lot of stupid and boring **** (usually just a single picture with a stupid title), mixed in with posts that range from sub-par to excellent quality - the latter being a little bit rare unfortunately.

Having got my start in /r/mechanicalkeyboards as well I thought I'd just chime in with a defense: even if you dislike its content, it serves a very important function. The subreddit, as mentioned by others in this thread, is very useful for exposing new users to the wonder of mechanical keyboards and for asking (noob) questions, and *for leading them eventually to geekhack. That's how I found my way here, after all.

There's some good **** on /r/mk. More and more original stuff all the time. It's nice for members of DT or GH to post different pics there than they post on their respective sites so you get some decent OC :)
I like that there's no restrictions. I have posted buds 'n clacks here and been reprimanded, but only downvoted on reddit. By people from GH, but never mind that :))

reddit doesn't have any good own content, but I regularly find some interesting topics from gh/dt over there I would have missed otherwise. There wouldn't be much left if you could filter out topics with phrases like "my first..." or "just got this..." though.

No, I don't really think so.
Before I joined GH I knew nothing of mechanical keyboards. When I wanted to learn I googled information and found some on TeamLiquid and some here on the Wiki. I also found info on DT. I found nothing of any use on Reddit at all.
If you genuinely want to learn about mech keyboards the MK subreddit isn't a very good way to do it at all.

I don't post very often on either, but one thing I like about reddit is the way conversations are threaded. In the longer threads here you end up reading though a bunch of one-line no-content posts. The layout on reddit makes it easier to just glance and ignore uninteresting comments. That being said, there isn't really any maker content on r/mk, which is the biggest reason I come here.

But GH is for community!  Once you get to know everyone, those useless posts become fun and entertaining banter.   :))

And that is honestly why I stay here. I mean, I like keyboards and stuff, but I just can't afford the hobby like most of you can. So I just come for the people.
tp thread is tp thread
Sometimes it's like he accidentally makes a thread instead of a google search.

I didn't mean to sound like I was criticizing the banter! All I meant is that in a multithreaded layout like reddit, conversations that turn into socializing stay in one thread, while information stays in another. It makes it easier when multiple conversations start in the same thread, which can get confusing to follow here (ie, who's responding to who when lots of posts are happening). I'm definitely not hating on the community here!

The thing is, that reddit is not a community. It's a place to share images and have discussions, but because it is a lot to do with images, there isn't a great deal of community forming. I've been on /r/mechanicalkeyboards for about 18 months to two years, and I honestly don't know anyone on there other than ripster and few guys from here who post there.

I don't prefer GH to /r/MK, or visa versa, but I think both are good for their own things. GH for community/discussion and a general fountain of knowledge, /r/MK for pictures, announcements and random facts you never knew. IMO, ripster knows his ****, and his imgur albums are actually really interesting.

The reason why every other post is a QFR, is because, like some of you have said, reddit is not a place to find in depth stuff about individual and specialist topics. people go there for a quick blast of information, lots of topics get posted and moderation is not as strict as it is here. This results in people who browse reddit looking at other things, find out about mechs from /r/computers, /r/buildapc etc, get linked to /r/MK and it escalates from there. The karma train then exists because the etiquette is a lot better on /r/MK than some of the other subs. People who post QFRs are seen as newbies, and people just let them show off their new board.

There are of course some interesting picture posts, some custom boards, some nice unique things, along with your usual reddit memes and stuff. But it is just a stop and go.

Can we get them to build the Alps ten feet higher and get Cherry to pay for it?

I get it too.  I just think GH is a better place because I care more about the community than I do random pictures of QFRs and Poker IIs...
