Cops and Donuts
« on: Thu, 03 July 2014, 01:40:08 »

I just made a ranty post about US security thugs. That got me to thinking about cops and donuts.

You see, cops are not associated with donuts everywhere. I did not know the US stereotype until after a while. We didn’t have Krispy Kreme or Dunkin Donuts on campus, so I didn’t see cops eating donuts.

But the cops sure loved bagels. I could often see them make bagel stops at the school cafeterias, walk around with bagel in mouth, or carry a box of bagels.

Now what’s the difference between a bagel and a donut, apart from the sugar and white flour content? Is a cop with a bagel basically the same as a cop with a donut? Is he an inferior version? Mind you, these ‘cops’ are basically the campus turkey bacon guys, probably the same folks who got kicked out of the US Army when it got slimmed down by Clinton after Iraq.

What do you guys think?

[this is a tongue in cheek post if any of you are wondering.]

Now what’s the difference between a bagel and a donut, apart from the sugar and white flour content?

Doughnuts are light and fluffy, fried, intended as a snack or a treat.

Bagels are dense and boiled, intended as more of a meal.

Social sub-sections have their own mini-cultures.

Regular cops have a donut and coffee culture.

Turkey bacons seem to like bagels, maybe because they can't get free donuts?

I won't say white people eat tomato sauce. I've rarely seen white people put tomato sauce on anything. But i've seen people take apart their hot dogs to scrape off the Heinz.

Cheese and cheese-related things, that's a different matter. Even the most fanatically dieting white person cannot stop helping herself to some cheese product.

As for Asians and rice, I dunno about that. I eat rice maybe once a week and avoid eating it if I can. When I lived in the US sometimes I went for months without eating rice.

Generally.. lots of asians eat rice.. this is a fact..

but I also do not like rice.. it was my #1 enemy at the dinner table, I remember fighting with my parents over not eating rice..

I also h8'ed steamed buns....

There was this one time.. when my parents brought home a dozen pork-buns.. When they left.. I ate all the pork inside, and not the buns..

That was the most angry I've ever seen them

I have something funny to add to that.

My personal best for eating a ridiculous amount of some Asian food: Fuzhou Fishballs. 30 of them.

They were almost 2 inches in diameter each.

We actually have a famous bakery a little bit north of me called Cops and Donuts that's owned by a group of retired officers (that's actually what I  thought this post was about) I would say that it's not one that holds true everywhere, but very group has an outlier.

You probably have one up on me, depending on how genuinely stuffed the Taro dumplings were.

Taro is way heavier than Fuzhou Fishballs. Possible to fill a stomach on under 10 of these if stuffed with just yam. i know, because whenever I make anything-yam, everyone eats much less than they would a commercial portion because I don't dilute my yam filling with starch and other crappy things of dubious provenance. But of course if the manufacturer didn't actually put much yam filling and mostly used flour, it would still be possible to eat 23.

But have you ever known anybody to eat more than 5 Dragon Boat Festival dumplings in one shot? This is some formidably heavy stuff. I've never managed over 3 despite being a glutton.

I was told never to eat too much sticky rice, or else it'd get stuck, and I would die....

Obviously I know now that I wouldn't die..  but it's one of those things that if they tell you as a child, you don't get over.. LOL

no, you would die. it's very high fiber, and when it sits in your stomach and absorbs water it will expand and burst your stomach. it's like eating way too much bread. so never stuff yourself with glutinous rice. If you eat till you're 80% full it will feel like 120% already in an hour.

I'd love to one-up you guys on eating stuff, but I'm not sure I can even find all these things to buy and then cook. Then again, I do live n civilization now so maybe its possible.

I had 25 pieces of sushi, some pork, a plate of noodles, a bun, and a plate of fruit once at a buffet.

I've only ever cheated @ sushi buffets, where i just eat the topping and not the rice..

yes this is extremely wasteful, but i don't feel bad, because rice has always been my dinner table nemesis.

Boiled?

Modern commercial bagels may be only baked, but traditionally they are boiled first and baked second. That is how they get such a smooth tough skin.

Consider osmosis: the greater concentration (eg salt) will migrate toward the lesser concentration (the unsalted water it is submerged in) so the reverse is "brining" which involves soaking meat in salt water to suck water in along with the salt. Both systems will attempt to equalize with each other.

My guess is that boiling a sausage in fresh water might dry it out, while boiling it in salt water might plump it up.

Better ask Alton Brown.

Hmmmmm...   i don't think the reason here is osmosis..

I think it's just cuz the time it takes to fully cook through a thick sausage on a grill or frying pan is so long that  it will dry out the sausage..

So if you boil it, it's already cooked or near fully cooked on the inside.. and then you just need to brown the outside for that burnt smell - goodness..

Well, similar.. but if i'm cooking a sausage or hot dog I will put a bit of water in the bottom of the frying pan and cover. Then boil off the water uncovered and add a drop or three of canola oil.

These things are absolutely great, and sell for $20-25 new, but can often be found at thrift stores and yard sales for <$5

I have 2 of them and use them all the time. You put a cup of water in the bottom ring and the fat renders out and runs off the domed top surface. Best of all - they don't get hot on the bottom (because of the water) and you can pick them up and carry them to the sink.

The surfaces are non-stick but you do not have to be delicate with them at all, and can use metal utensils.
