Movies with terrible sequels
« on: Mon, 13 October 2014, 05:11:55 »
I just watched Sin City: A Dame To Kill For and it got me thinking, what are some of history's worst sequels? Not just movies where the sequel is not as good as the original, but movies where the sequel is a genuinely awful film.

I'll start off with a heavy hitter of horrible heinousness: Starship Troopers 2
Truly terrible.

(...)Whereas back then I wrote about the tyranny of the majority, today I'd combine that with the tyranny of the minorities. These days, you have to be careful of both. They both want to control you. The first group, by making you do the same thing over and over again. The second group is indicated by the letters I get from the Vassar girls who want me to put more women's lib in The Martian Chronicles, or from blacks who want more black people in Dandelion Wine.
I say to both bunches, Whether you're a majority or minority, bug off! To hell with anybody who wants to tell me what to write. Their society breaks down into subsections of minorities who then, in effect, burn books by banning them. All this political correctness that's rampant on campuses is b.s.

The special edition version of Alien 3 is also quite good and very much worthy a follow up to Aliens. It's such a shame they total ****ed the director making it and totally changed the movie as they were making it... The theatrical version is trash.

Interesting... I just realized that I have the SE on DVD but have never watched it ...

There is also a completely different script for a third Alien movie that has been going around. That script is set in orbit around Earth, with the Cold War between USA and USSR still going on and both sides getting hit by aliens.

btw. Cameron's Aliens is awesome.

The Matrix, while no Citizen Kane, was a great stand-alone movie. Then they made money and decided sequels were wise.

If you have the chance watch the making off doc for Alien 3, it's pretty amazing. The original script and plot of Alien 3 that was green lit is almost nothing like the movie that then got made.

I actually loved the whole chase/fight sequence in the middle of the 2nd one, it was brilliantly choreographed. From the Frenchman's palace to the highway, that was all great entertainment.

Oh, I agree. They were fun movies, but they added nothing to the first film apart from tight choreography and special effects. The story got worse and I grew to hate the characters. Everyone.

EDIT: Actually, the first sequel was fun. The second was not fun. And heavy handed. And irritating. I kind of blocked it out of my memory for the most part.

Bourne Series of movies. Departed from the books halfway through the first one, and just kept going down from there IMHO.

Matrix 2 and 3 weren't that bad..

I think the issue is.. they were too similar to alot of scifi stuff (anime too) that's already come out since the first matrix...

So that is to say, ,they waited too long to make the squeals..  if they were done a bit earlier, then it would've been Fresh..

Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark was good. Temple of Doom was awful. The Last Crusade was awesome.

They were all good technical feats... the trouble with Temple of Doom was the really Odd comic-book boss type bad guy... which took some of the realism away from the series.

I thought Last Crusade was awesome, with the exception of the leap of faith..  I mean.. I know they didn't have the CGI to do something fancier..  but still... that was just dumb...  maybe if they made the bridge out of glass or something.

Starship Troopers, the whole series was NOT meant to be serious, so I thought they carried out what the audience was expecting quite well.

Anchorman 1 was probably my favorite comedy in the last 10 or so years.

And yet, Anchorman 2 was so awful.

Patton Oswalt has an amazing story about what it was like on the set of Blade 3.
Wesley Snipes' antics are hilarious.
