There was a guy at my office who ate one. Didn't smell so nice.
Honestly the ones I've had never smell, but maybe that's because I only ever have them when they're freshly made, which only smells like the average boiled egg + salt. I have seen balut packaged in a can which I assume, as with call canned food, would taste like ass when compared to ones that are freshly cooked
I'm filipino and I love eating balut (google it if you don't know what it is) whenever I go back to the Philippines to visit family etc. A LOT of people that I've talked to about this dish find it disgusting that I would eat something like that, but honestly I don't find it too bad (it's actually really nice IMO). I kind of just see it as how you would see a cooked roast chicken, but instead of being cooked in an oven it's cooked within its own egg.
balut is definitely one of the stranger foods I've heard of, never tried it though.
Man if you ever go to the Philippines you should definitely try it. I would recommend having one from a restaurant that serves them rather then the ones that are sold by street vendors because the majority of my non filipino friends that I've made taste balut made by street vendors didn't go down so well for them, even though I turned out perfectly fine eating the same thing
