YouTube bans singing
« on: Mon, 09 March 2015, 19:39:05 »
So apparently YouTube has a new policy against singing any copyrighted songs now thus shutting down thousands of well-established and beloved channels and/or forcing them to take down any song covers of any kind.

Thoughts on this ****ery?

Early April fools?

This was my thought!
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Somethings just can't sustain themselves over a long period of time.

Eventually, people are going to move over to the next big video service. It's already happening except very slowly.

They've got to get a grip on this DMCA ****... It is doing nothing but wrecking up and coming artist/content creators...

I've had my own music taken down because someone filed a false DMCA against me! lol

It's just ridiculous you can file a claim with no evidence... They do no background/history check on your claim, they error on the safe side and just take it down.

Yeah, I noticed their lax flagging policies start to slip over the past 2 years. A lot of videos have been taken down that seem like no one viewed for and violations, and yet tons of really messed up stuff that remain on YouTube under the guise of educational material. Like the tranny who blows up a balloon after inserting it into his ballsack and then jerks off. Educational. Sure.

Artistic question for you Artistic ppl and debates.

Why are song covers and song playing(riffs etc) considered OK

While some freehand painting a rembrant or the mona lisa considered forgery?

in the end "a cover" is just a PC way to say COPY

and i'm pretty sure google is doing this b/c DMCA forced their hand.

according to https://www.legalzoom.com/articles/posting-cover-songs-on-youtube-what-you-need-to-know it was never okay to just post covers of other people's music. but it seems like people can purchase a license to stream covers at a rate of 14 - 16 dollars per song according to the linked site which is kinda lame but probably not a deal breaker for the more famous cover artists.

Covers and copyrighted material has always been subject to Youtube's Content ID matching service, which basically allows for such content to be posted (I mean, there are hundreds of full length albums and films up right now) but tags them and notifies whoever has signed up to the service of the infringing videos. They can then take action by taking them down, monetizing the videos with ads, adding a buy link (such as iTunes), or ignoring them.

Problem with this for some content creators is scammy companies that either have no real stake in the rights, or falsely flag videos that don't even contain the copyrighted material they claim. Such requests have hurt some smaller channels in the past, which don't receive the protection of a parent network.

Still, I'd like to see some Youtube link about what the OP is claiming.

It's only a forgery when you attempt to sell it..

As a youtube song cover,  They are technically selling an intellectual property that belongs to the original artist/ production company..

If youtube cover artists made $0 dollars, and GOOGLE also made $0 dollars..  then it's ok..

But if Either google, or the cover artist make any amount >$0.00   .. then it's infringement unless the song has been licensed.

There's also a huge difference between 'This is my cover of *artist*'s song, *song title*, thumbs up if you enjoyed it!' and 'This is totally a legit Van Gogh, give me millions'.

It'd be more like 'Hey I was experimenting with painting techniques, here's a painting of *modern scene* in my best approximation of Van Gogh, what do you think?'. Or actually more like 'For fun I decided to do Van Gogh's Starry Night in my own painting style, hope you like it'.

Let's not forget that a lot of popular songs are actually covers. Jimi Hendrix didn't write All Along The Watchtower, for example, but his version of it is the one most people think of if you mention the song, rather than Bob Dylan's. (And you can spot the Battlestar Galactica reboot fans by who hums the Final Four theme when it comes up because they STILL can't get that damned riff out of their heads. :P)

There's also of course though considerations of what you're doing with it. Like if you're selling it somewhere, no, pay up, but some random guy doing a cover for fun I don't think should be an issue.

Well that's the thing, the easiest **** to upload (if you have the talent) is a song cover, i'm sure there are literally thousands of channels of ppl just uploaded cover after cover for a myriad of reasons.
1. good exposure.
2. to make money, you upload enough, you get enough unique views and you're asked to be a youtube partner and split the profits with youtube, and this is where the DMCA is pissed off, they don't want anyone making money off copyrighted songs.

You can't really say it's new material, just repurposed.

Hell, you still have to pay the *******s that own "happy birthday to you" if you sing it in any type of media, it is not a public domain works. Every family member that sings happy birthday is basically covering a song.

I'm sure if you made a documentary, and scooped up some old footage of happy birthday being sung, you'd have to pay the happy birthday company for rights.
