OMG Don't buy Samsung 5TB D3 Station
« on: Wed, 05 August 2015, 12:03:04 »
It just overheated on me...under Sequential write, not even random write

It hit 60Celcius and just turned off..

It has a 5000rpm seagate drive inside so i figured it would run cool.. I was wrong...

Room is 80 F

I have another WD external,  same enclosed design with very little ventilation..  that one is also 5000rpm  and it idles at 30C, and only gets up to 40-45

I'm stuck on Vantec NexStar3 enclosures and WD drives
I favor WD Purple 3 Years warranty for external enclosures.

WD Black and RE with 5 Years warranty are quite expensive for external and you don't really need that much performance there.

Does the nx star3 have fan ?

I've known for years that Externals die from heat...  which is why i stopped buying 7200rpm externals..

the 5000rpm seem alrite..

But this Samsung, yikes..

I think I'm just gonna get the active cooled enclosure and stick a 7200rpm in it.. perhaps.. might as well.

They were fine before they acquired Maxtor, now it's pretty hit or miss :\

The NX3 doesn't have active cooling but it's a metal case that is pretty good at dissipating heat.
I have some with WD Black in there and they tend to heat (never to the point of shutting down dough). But no noticeable heat on Purples

The WD Purple shines for low power (low heat emission), low noise and high heat tolerance. They give a 3 years warranty on a drive built for 24/7 video surveillance. So they know these guys  will spin 24/7 in small quarters/poorly ventilated systems. The purple gets my vote for external enclosures.

Now if you don't mind a higher failure rate because of heat but 5 years irreproachable warranty. You can go with a WD Black or RE= $$$
For backup and high capacity external storage - I got to Purple and RED
For affordable high performance - Black (faster transfer rate over USB 3.0 than the Purple or RED)

Now for indestructible/high vibration/major temperature changes you can't beat SSD drives.

Stay away from the WD GREEN Piece of S-beep-t - they're no better than Seagate/Maxtors cheap consumer oriented crap.

I've got a seagate 2tb drive in my computer, I fear the day it'll give up.

that means I can recycle this drive into new computer.
