I get it now...
« on: Sat, 31 December 2016, 09:17:54 »
I finally got my hands on a topre board, the Leopold FC660C to be exact. I was always skeptical when it came to the ''Topre hype'' but I can finally say that I completely understand why people love topre so much.
It's like laying your hands on a cushion each time you actuate a keystroke, absolutely incredible!

It's ok to enjoy rubber dome..

But let's not overhype this again...

hahahahah....

The topre love hinges upon Familiarity..  because the MAJORITY of the new users grew up on rubber dome keyboards..

So if they went to Cherry, which is mostly a linear experience,   they'd come back to Topre, and it feels very similar to their original keyboards with the heavy first tactility...

The only rubber dome keyboard that felt relatively close to Topre was (if I recall correctly) Dell KB1421 (of unknown OEM), but while the KB1421 feels relatively good, it has nothing of the rock solid build construction of a Realforce. (I've never used a Leopold so I can't say if those are as well-made.)

Other rubber dome keyboards in general though don't feel the same as Topre. If you look at the force curve for Topre, it's almost a sine wave, and that's how it feels. Rubber domes tend to either have a sharp tactile point, or very little tactility, while Topre achieve a very stretched tactile peak with distinct tactility. Topre has a characteristic feel that differs quite significantly from other rubber dome keyboards. One advantage with capacitive sensing is that there is no requirement for the top of the dome to bottom out, so the overtravel feel can be eased, which potentially explains why they can achieve a feel that nobody else can. The Topre force curve provides feedback without the mild shock associated with most tactile switches, making it very comfortable. (I don't know if I'm desensitised now, or the switches are worn after six years of use, but I could really sense the shock from MX Blue tactility and it could be quite unpleasant and jarring at times. Domes are never that bad, of course.)

Personally I found the Topre feel to be too rounded. It would be interesting to try out a keyboard of ITT ETL18 switches, as those have a similarly rounded feel but not the soft landing of a dome. They feel a lot like tactile Mitsumi switches but without the scratch feel and sound.

I never "got" Topre.  Key travel is too long (I like to bottom out) and the thock sound that everyone worships pisses me off.

Oh yes, and the constant whining about clones stems being scratchy when Topre is almost as bad.  And if you don't believe me check out Youtube where practically every Topre video from South Korea is being tested with a different lubricant.

If you love it and it's your end game then congrats to you but it is most certainly not the best just because it has a higher price tag.

For what it's worth however ...... The FC660C is probably the best Topre board I've tried out of all of them including the clones.

Maybe Topre is overpriced, I don't know, but out of all of the keyboards I've owned and tried I have to say, in terms of feel, Topre (specifically Realforce) is my favorite thus far.

I think what would be interesting is if we took all the little stems out and machined them one at a time on a precision lathe...

Then Charge people $2000 for this Super Precision stem Topre..

Congratulations! Experimenting and finding what you like is what it's all about. Don't be put off by some of the comments in this thread. Every Topre themed thread always deteriorates quickly, it seems.

Anyway... I have several Topre boards but I've never had hands on a Leopold Topre. I'd like to try one. The combo of Topre and that layout is intriguing. Happy typing!

I'm doubtful that that's the path followed by most Topre fans, partly because I'd guess not many people jump from $5 boards to the price level of an RF or HHKB.  In my case, I grew up originally on manual typewriter keys, followed by electric, followed by many years of Alps keyboards (Northgates, mostly).

These days I circle through RF Topre, Cherry red, and white Alps (but I foisted a Model M on my wife, because I'm not crazy about it).  For me, my RF boards are the most elegant to type on -- but, as many have said, keyboard feel is a very individual thing.  De gustibus et coloribus non est disputandum

I've never used Topre but Cherry is more linear than Topre is? I just bought a board with Cherry Red because I thought it might feel slightly more like a rubber dome (without the finger pain, hopefully) as the Cherry Blue is a little light for me and I don't particularly have strong or positive feelings about the actuation click.

Haha I gave my gf a model m too. It's her favorite because she likes whatever is loudest.  ;D

Perhaps my initial response was a little sassy.  Yes personal preference is everything.  Now I know everyone can't put a disclosure in every single Topre thread however those who are curious about it should try to reach out and borrow a board first before putting the money down.

I'm probably the weirdest dude on GH who actually likes rubber domes but doesn't care for Topre or most mechanicals.

As always YMMV.
