So, you're looking to buy a new microSD card..

But Which one... ??

Tp4 has benched the 64GB iterations of the popular cards. They're FASTER than the 128GB versions.

Observations and Conclusion:

So, It was odd that the Samsung card was so much slower in my Samsung phone, as Samsung has been caught red-handed cheating in Benchmarks by Review sites, You'd think samsung would cheat with their cards in their own fone..  But alas this doesn't seem to be the case.

An explanation for this lower performance would be perhaps Samsung card use a more involved wear-leveling algorithm.   This would inherently slow down the cards, because the card needs to take more time with its allocation.

Another possibility that Samsung is slower is that, they've tuned the controller for more durable continuous writing. These cards get real hot during continuous I/O, so you can tune either for peak performance which heats up, or tune it for continuous where it's more towards warm.

I know for a fact (contacted sandisk) that their extreme lines are NOT designed for continuous i/o and it in fact voids the warranty.

The Sandisk Extreme (2016) is a newer iteration than the Original Sandisk Extremes sold in 2014 which were TLC.

The Newly Produced Line of Sandisk Extreme and Ex Pro are now MLC..

The fact that the Sandisk Extreme PRO is slower than the Extreme in my fone would Indicated that the Newest 2016 iteration of the Extreme either has a stronger microcontroller, or uses less aggressive wear leveling.

The Extreme only loses to the Extreme Pro and Samsung Pro Select in Sequential Write,  Something that really doesn't matter because these cards are not going into expensive DSLRs..

These chips are mostly going into Cellphones and GoPros,  both of which only writes at a Max speed of 7.5MB/s for their 4K video recording.

They would certainly work well in a raspberry pi for ur pi server needs.

It's impossible to test durability, because there's no way any one guy would have a large sample size of these cards, since they're not commonly used in bulk quantities.

Based on these tests,  Sandisk Extreme seems to be the Best Choice for Performance...

Samsung Pro+ is being retired, replaced by Pro Select

NEW line of Sandisk Extreme Pro is now UHS-II only, the UHS-I cards of the Older PRO line is now called Extreme Plus.

UPDATE:

Sandisk Extreme 128GB,   the 128gb is indeed slower than the 64gb variant .. (Not by much) .. but slower..

Performance in Cellfone

sandisk extreme 128gb 2016

7.83 MB/s Read     3.06 MB/s  Write

Sequential Performance:

76.14 MB/s Read     50.71  MB/s Write

Damn. It's tough out here on the streets of microSD.
I generally hate all keycaps. Keycaps are for poofs. Real men touchtype on stems. Non-functional artisans are awesome, I use them for the ESC key ... escape is for cowards anyways, real men go frontal assault.

I was asking a serious question, re-calibrate your forum interpretive skills. no need to call me a **** and if you feel the need to call me a **** at least turn your child filter off so I know what **** is.

Uh oh.. fanpeople you've engaged maximum ruffle..

hahahahahahahahahaha...

Relax ya'll..

Take some pictures...

@ rabbitfire:

Don't waste money on these extreme cards rabbitfire..

The only reason I tested them (borrowed from my photography guy),  is because I need Random i/o performance.

If you're using a Go Pro,  that only writes at a maximum of 7.5MB/s in 4k mode.

So there's absolutely no reason to spend the money on these extreme cards.

For a Go pro, you can safely go with the Samsung Evo/ Evoselect/ Evoplus line..  They will be more than adequate as long as you're not backfilling.

Looking for a good 128GB card for my new phone and the Samsung Pro+@€86 looked quite good on paper. You're saying it's not all that?

I mean there is always the Lexar@€169 but that's at double the price. And the Sandisk@€195 is even more expensive around here.

Just looking for something that can handle 4K video (bitrate of 52 Mbps) and lots of data like music files and photos.

get the sandisk extreme (uhs-1)....   not the extreme plus or extreme pro.

If you look at the benchmarks,  it's pretty clear that the samsung pro select has the weakest random i/o performance.

Sequential is pretty much the same all around..  if you're using it just for video and no apps.. It doesn't matter which one you get..

You should probably consider the EVO line from samsung if you're only worried about videos and no apps..

Apps are what you need the extreme series for.

The two cards you linked to are UHS-2 cards which is why they're expensive..  UHS-2 cellfones do not yet exist .

UHS-2 is for High end DSLR cameras with very high bit rate..

Things like our cellfones and go pro has 4k resolution recording, but it's very low bitrate for 4k..

Even entry level cards will be sufficient.. 60mbit 4k on most hand-mobile devices like the go PRO records at 7.5MB/s  that's it, there's no magic to it.. it's a number..

THe UHS-2 also have slow random i/o performance , but they're not designed for it, so that's expected.
