[DEBUG] Ergodox stops transmitting?
« on: Thu, 13 April 2017, 15:55:33 »
I bought an ErgoDox on Massdrop about 3 years ago and have loved it.  This month it started intermittently ceasing to transmit characters OR continually transmitting a single character that was pressed.  It seems to "die" intermittently and the only way to get it back is to unplug it and plug it back in, effectively reseting the teensy.

I am to the point that I assume this is the teensy 2.0 somehow going bad.  Is there any chance I'm right on that?

Is there anything else I could do to help diagnose the problem further?  What other parts could be failing?

If it *is* the teensy 2.0 board, I assume it's possible to simply replace it, right?  What would I need to do to unsolder it and replace it?

All I'm really trying to do is see if I can get by without paying another $300 for one of these.  I like it and would like it to last many more years.

most likely the trrs port wore out.. that port is a piece of ****.. fffffff..

I just soldered my wires direct , and it's been working perfect ever since.. happened on both my ergodoxes, where one side of the trrs wore out.

it's the port not the cable.

Massdrop fking cheaped out on us and got us the WORST quality trrs port.

Ahhh.  Very useful.   Is there a better cable to use?  I know very little about wiring -- what's the best wire to use to solder them directly?

doesn't really matter, but you want to check if its' teh problem first..

So when it's plugged in and working.

lightly jiggle the trrs ends, one side at a time, and see if the disconnection behavior occurs.

Yep.  That's very clearly it.  Was able to reproduce consistently when wiggling the left one.

Is there a guide or tutorial for soldering wires directly?  Is it just clipping and stripping the trrs wires, solder sucking the ports off, and just matching the internal wires up on each side and soldering them in?

a to b.. that's the whole thing.

You could also put in another port if you want.. but make sure not to get the super cheap port. hahaha.
