Sadly , I was just reading how the small farmers could no longer compete easily with the big guys on staple crops..  because they simply can't afford the giant machines to improve economy of scale.

Technically my dad's longest job was factory worker so not on IT salary but on factory worker salary owning a farm (in Italy) to sustain one family for everything from vegetables to meat to cereals to whatever is quite costly. You don't have much a fortune left at the end of the month, that's for sure.

Everything needs regular maintenance, animal cages, fruit trees, the soil. You need a lot of tools, such as metal wires and metal panes for the animal houses. Wood panels and insulating material if you want to go deluxe. Everything to cover the more delicate vegetables for harsh temperatures and bad weather. A place to dump the animals' and green waste, I don't know what it is called in English. You dump everything in there where it ferments so you can use it for the soil after harvesting. Preparing a good soil for next year's harvest may be the highest cost depending on large your fields are, and even if you take good care of it good and bad weather can screw you royally.

It's an all-year job, it can be very satisfying if you are sick and tired of the city. I've read many people go nature at the beginning of their pension.

EDIT: I just realized I posted in off topic. Ops?

I can't stand farms. Either you're knee deep in animal dung or you spread it on your land in order to spawn disgusting vegetables, but either way your job primarily involves faeces.

I'm an extreme city boy.

You might not see it this way,

But you're actually wearing sleeping, eating micrograms of yours and other people feces Everyday..

Feces is everywhere..   If anything  cities have way way more diseased feces closer to you, because of all the humans..

The margins in farming have always been horrible and only really made sense when you'd big families providing you with free labour. Now you can't rely on that, have to borrow for machinery and that's a tough balancing act when you're relying on the weather or market prices not to **** you over.

Most of the taxi drivers in my area are 60 year old farmers falling asleep at the wheel working at 4am on a Sunday morning.

I've seen vegetable gardens work as a business in conjunction with a cafe lunch spot, gardening course, event space type combo.

Farmers everywhere are struggling. There are very low margins, unless you have verticality to throw away the middle-man. For instance, if you grow your own fruit and make preserves from it and sell it yourself. But lots of farmers already do that and don't make much. You would need scale in each step to keep your own overhead costs down and you need to make your product more interesting than the cheap stuff available at the supermarket down the road.

I own half of a farm but I don't live on it. My brother does. He thinks he got the better deal. I don't.

I'm sure someone in the Trump administration can put you in touch with someone... Just don't go around blabbing about it, okay?

So that's how you can afford all those great keyboards: You never bother eating. What a system!

You might not see it this way... But you're actually wearing sleeping, eating micrograms of yours and other people feces Everyday... Feces is everywhere...

Health experts say you shouldn't even leave your toothbrush out in your bathroom because it collects bits of feces made airborne when you flush your toilet. If you think I'm making this up, see Mythbusters page here. (Personally, I make a point of leaving my toothbrush out... It's always seemed like a good idea to build up a resistance to feces, rather than going through life fearing it.)

BTW, if you're worried about germs and stuff, keyboards are notoriously dirty. The scientist who did this UK study:

Quote
...swabbed a [restroom] seat and a toilet door handle in a typical London office for comparison. One of the keyboards in the experiment had to be removed from the office because it was five times dirtier than the lavatory seat and home to 150 times the acceptable limit of bacteria.

Just imagine where that vintage MK you're typing on may have been.  :?P
