Electric is the future..

people buying gasoline  is like  gekhakrs and model Ms..

Honestly I will embrace it. A lot of people in Australia are complaining about how to implement electric cars on accounts of the massive distances between everything. But then they did a study and found that the majority of people don't actually travel that far using their personal cars. Most take public transport or are just sooking.

Then again there are some people that do...... like the moron that drove 10 hours to a meeting and then 10 hours back.

Tbh, my own car has terrible fuel economy; it's an Audi B3 from 1986. It's older than me, and thirsty. But then again, I've had it for months and not even drained half the tank, and driving it is MUCH greener than buying a new car.

We need solar-powered cars.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

solar is super and all .. but the panels use a fair bit of energy to create .. currently my understanding a Solar Panel needs to be generating for 4~yrs or so to reach the point it has made more power than was used in it's creation.

but they really fly in the renewable energy / electric cars ..etc solar power..blah blah blah. batteries.. batteries have a huge environmental impact in the mining of the materials for them , their production and ultimately their disposal after they have be depleted..

There's no alternative..  this is all we got..   you run out of fossils quite soon,  if we're not elon muskin' by that time,  it's all over,   Get ready for Thunder dome, and road warrior.. !!

I mean.. do we run out of fossil fuels that soon?? (there is still a lot of oil in the ground)  If we want to have a fully honest conversation about sustainability we need to add population control / reduction into the mix..  Human population growth is a primary driver of wilderness destruction and general environmental suckatude...

I mean.. yes absolutely we need to find alternatives.. but as the technology stands I don't believe for a second electric cars are what is going to save us / avoid thunderdome... personally..

.. in my view someone eventually has to be willing to actually confront population growth and then also development of new technologies that may actually work on a large scale..

current EV's just don't get it done... they don't

The human population will top out around 11 billion.. there will be NO MORE after that..

This will be a natural phenomenon with NO Intervention necessary..

For example,  ALL developed nations have fertility rate LOWER than  2..    Which means every single developed nation is shrinking.

The only places on earth with growing populations are primitive african continent nations.

As for the fossils,  WE WILL RUN OUT,  it's not a renewable resource, and it's not easy to find,

Once the middle east dries up, we have to go sustainable, or begin building thunderdomes.

This is a true, but outdated statement.

Currently it takes a few years to get back the energy, but the newer generation ultrapure silicone solar cells (you know, chlorosilane based stuff) will last for over a decade. It's roughly 2 years of investment for 10 years of free energy at the moment.

If you GENUINELY look into it, or have a general grasp of basic physics, you'll see energy doesn't come free; quite the opposite actually. But we're getting closer and closer to finding a good, or at least relatively profitable, solution. Moreover, I think we'll suddenly find a solution a lot faster when oil DOES actually run out. The only important question is how much of our environment we'll have damaged in the process.

Above all though, one thing is certain. Earth doesn't need us to survive, but we need the Earth to survive. How much we want to shoot ourselves in the foot is up to us. And currently, we're shooting ourselves more in the foot than we should.

fair enough... good to know.. I'm glad the solar panels are getting better /have shorter time to making more energy then it took to make them.. that is fantastic..  anyone know how much energy it takes to properly recycle / dispose of them at the end of their service life??

also on the batteries since generally you'll need these as well as solar panels.. any idea what the costs  ...energy wise, environmental impacts of said batteries .. and any new and exciting improvements on those fronts??

Batteries are still a no go..

Which is why nuclear will still be needed incase we don't invent super duper batteries for nights..

Oh yeah.... because of 'merica... some jacktard in a prius tried to jack rabbit start next to my Truck today... I was all NOPE.. 308 hydrocarbon spewin' horse powers..left his prius way behind... then someone with a new honda ridgeline (lol.. front wheel drive truck.. **** that) also had a go.. result ridgeline slower than Colorado V6 sorry dude.

A Tesla model S however faster than truck... the people driving them don't usually go for it..because they are all terrified of running out of batteries?? or whatever but they are quick if they decide to go for it.... I haven't encountered one having a go yet, but I know for a fact they'd be quicker and that is fine.. because they are not taking a 60" flatscreen home from Costco in a tesla

Congratulations, your Colorado is a hair slower than a 132hp Corolla 0-60 and just edges it out in the 1/4 mile. Such a beast you're driving!  :thumb:

Do note, though, that it would get stomped by the mighty 2005 Corolla XRS with it's 170hp.  :p

I know so many people with boats, and it seems that the maximum number of times they take said boats out... maybe once every two years, may as well just rent a car that can tow. Same deal with couches.

Live in Western Europe. Drive bike and public transport everywhere.
For the one or two times a year that I need a car for a trip I'll rent it. Hell of a lot cheaper.

Also, @ 1.96USD per Liter ($7.44 per gallon) plus high road tax and VAT I won't be driving a car for now. Let alone a truck.
I did however learn how to drive in a van and I still really enjoy those. Seems much more practical than a pick up in my opinion.

But good on you for enjoying your new car.

Living in Western Europe, I wouldn't mind a car. And a boat. I wouldn't need to tow it though, as it will be where it belongs -- in the marina :p
(...)Whereas back then I wrote about the tyranny of the majority, today I'd combine that with the tyranny of the minorities. These days, you have to be careful of both. They both want to control you. The first group, by making you do the same thing over and over again. The second group is indicated by the letters I get from the Vassar girls who want me to put more women's lib in The Martian Chronicles, or from blacks who want more black people in Dandelion Wine.
I say to both bunches, Whether you're a majority or minority, bug off! To hell with anybody who wants to tell me what to write. Their society breaks down into subsections of minorities who then, in effect, burn books by banning them. All this political correctness that's rampant on campuses is b.s.

In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

fair enough.. I have been having a good time in teh truck.. I quite like it..  also been getting 24~mpg on the highway so no bad at all for the size ..etc of the vehicle.. that is about as good mpg as I have seen on a pickup truck

my dad drives a Ford F150 (ford...bah... true story my dad has drivin' a ford of some sort for the last 30yrs... I have owned 2 fords they both kinda sucked..so I started getting Chevy's.) he also has a 6cylinder motor.. his truck is 10~yrs old he says he gets 10mpg in that thing average..

I've actually had a lot of cars now that I think about it::

Volkswagen Bug, Bus, Jetta GLI and a GTI
Ford Explorer (junk wagon.. but kinda fun but frequently broken and fixed under warranty then traded in... because warranty was about to expire ..as was the rear transaxle I think)
Ford Focus  (don't ask me why.. total crapwagon) I was kinda broke and gas was spensive' at the time so I drove that for a bit. (I hated this car probably more than any car i have ever owned)
Dodge Diplomat Police Interceptor (well ex police car anyways) total junk but fun AF
Volvo 240 Sedan , 245GL Wagon (both super fun cars in a big boxy hilarious kinda way..  got kinda scolded by the police doing doughnuts in the snow in the wagon in a closed Kmart parking lot.. but no tickets or anything)
Chevy Cruze, Malibu and now Colorado LT (these have been my last 3 cars all Chevy's all pretty decent.. them customer loyalty deals they keep bringing me back)

kinda of an eclectic collection of cars that I have had at one point or another now that I think about it...
