Grandiose views of self, devaluation of others, lack of empathy, gaslighting (distorting facts and insisting on blind obedience to one’s own view of reality) – all in service to the ego of the narcissist – pose clear and present dangers to relationships. A narcissist without conscience, restraints, checks or balances can easily become an authoritarian or sociopath, insisting that they are not beholden to laws or responsible to their relationships, organization, community or even country as a whole.
