Wrist/RSI issues. Looking at some very light switches....
« on: Sun, 17 February 2019, 09:37:31 »
I've always preferred higher actuation forces on my boards to limit any bottoming out. Additionally, I've always installed o-rings/pads to them but recently I've been having some serious wrist pains that affect my typing. I don't want it to get worse but I think I'll have to see a doctor soon.

I've also been out of the kb game for a bit and would like some recommendations. Two criteria would be: < 50g, and linear.  The Filco Stingray is interesting but I'm not sure I can justify the price for the package. Please help fellers.

I'm not entirely convinced that you would be helped with only a change of switch weight. I know that it once helped me, but I also switched to using vertical mice. Maybe switching to a tented keyboards might help you better.

I would still use O-rings or choose MX Silent Red, so that you would not have to try to not bottom out because I think that alone with hard linear switches could be straining.
Personally, I can't stand linear switches, and I use Blue or Clear.

If you have wrist issues, it has nothing to do with the type of switch.

It's all about TENTING..

ONLY tenting does anything to improve wrist issues.

This image illustrates the problem on a MOUSE,  but on keyboard, the problem is solved in the same fashion by having a tented 2piece  keyboard.

The lightest switch that i know of is the gateron clears. They have about 35 g of force to press, and might be comfortable for you.

thanks for replies, guys.

Yea this is a temporary solution to my issues since I spend half my day on the computer. I'm sure lighter switches are the way to go but the ergonomics are also important.

The ergodox is a board I've always been interested in so I will look into it a lot more now.

Cheers

If this becomes a problem, seriously: see a doctor if it gets really bad.

aw man. This has been an issues for decades now. I was a hardcore FPS player (Quake 2,3) and I guess I'm reaping what I sowed. We'll see.

I still haven't decided what to get since I've been mostly working and not paying attention to anything else.

Cheers

Yeah, if it's wrists your switches ain't gonna do much. You may want to adjust your sitting position, desk height, armrests (very important) and so on. The switch behaviour will, however, affect how your fingers feel. So yeah, make sure they don't require or provoke excessive force given your typical typing patterns, including whether you hit from the centre or side, at what angle, etc. Somehow, I always end up going back to my blues, although I'm pretty sure they aren't ideal. Still, in many ways they cause less fatigue than lighter-rated switches. But I can't type on a Model M any more, too painful.
