Bitcasa Screws Me Over
« on: Thu, 23 October 2014, 20:00:20 »
Just got an email today from Bitcasa. The relevant bit:
"On November 15th, Bitcasa will be ending its support of Infinite storage plans. As a current infinite plan subscriber that is using less than 10TB of space, you have the option to convert to our new Pro plan, which offers 10TB for $99/mo. or $999/yr."

But last fall they said this, grandfathering in existing customers and prompting me to pay them another $99 for service through next spring:
"Existing subscribers will get to keep their current plan's rates and storage, but won't get access to some new offerings -- such as the future Linux client -- unless they switch to the new pricing scheme."

This blows. I have about 6 TB uploaded to their servers, now I have to start over with another service. And they have my subscription fee hostage for the next 5 months, unless I pay almost $500 for the new scheme.

Their side of the story here:

Used FTP back in the day. Too much trouble and isn't seamless.

I have my own backup server here at home. Also is a media server for Plex, etc. but I needed an online backup in case of fire, theft, etc. The movies aren't that critical, but I have about 2TB of photos too.

This isn't the most efficient solution, but you could purchase an Office 365 subscription, which includes 1 TB of space. Then set  up 5 new email addresses because each of those would get their own separate 1 TB account at no additional charge. Amazon is selling subscription keycards for $63 and change.

If you want offsite backup... have you considered getting some external drives or build a 2nd nas? Then you could keep it at parents or friends, at work, a locker at the bus station... or where ever. In case of a nas if both places have adequate bandwidth you can back up remotely. If not o in case of external drives you could go get it and connect it locally every week or whatever to do backups. This is what I used to do before I stopped caring. It definitely much cheaper than 'cloud' services.

If it's for offsite backup and for limited amount of data you can go with glacier - it requires some amount of setup (but for example there is an app for that if you run sybology) but it can be cost effective.

lol no.

AWS services are convenient yes, but cost effective, they are not.

6TB on Glacier would be $60/month, then $.12/GB to get your data... ($720 if you had to do a full restore)
