RTX 4070 Super and other Super models
« on: Wed, 20 December 2023, 02:16:07 »
Anyone waiting for one of those new Super models?
I'm considering smallish upgrade form my 3070 to 4070 Super, as long as price will be as close as possible to current 4070.

Unfortunately no - it was fine for 3 years now, but Cyberpunk and latest Dead Space showed me that in 4K it goes too low, like below 25fps.
4070s should push to 40fps minimum (if speculations to be more or less equal to 4070Ti is correct), which would be enough or me without spending loads of money.

I play on a 3080 and find myself in between a 3440x1440 widescreen and a 4k tv. I don't notice any sluggishness or frame dips (outside of intense loading like in RDR2 in a major city).
Always looking for Alps SKCM/SKCL switches. Feel free to DM.

Yeah, 3080 hold pretty well against new series. It will be a bit below 4070s.

I don't see myself updating my PC anytime soon (several years) because the 3080 still slaps most titles and as hardware gets more and more expensive games that are more accessible are coming out and are often better values and more fun than new AAA title. I am more excited to finish RDR2 to play Dave the Diver than any other game right now.

It's not worth it,  7900xtx is best value, @ $750 USD. Raytracing isn't there yet unless you get the 4090/ 5090.  Even then, it's 1080p gaming.  DLSS/ Frame Gen etc, just bad experience mostly, compression blur + inputlag.

They say AMD is focusing on the Mid-range for 8*** series.

Now, the rumor is 8800xt is the only card they're making.  That doesn't quite track.

There should be at least 1 mid and 1 high.

8800xt will have to be the mid, if projected performance is between 79xt and xtx.

SO, that means,  they'll do something like a 8900 xtx.

7900xtx is only 15-20% lower raster performance than 4090.

It's not "that" far to push.

I don't know, tp. Last time I had AMD card was I think in 90s and all those Radeons were crap.
I do Intel and Nvidia. But if AMD cards are great, I may jump over the fence.
7900XTX in UK is £820 (~1040$). I'm going on a nice trip to USA next year, going to go around many states, maybe I should buy GPU there? ;)

Thing is 4070/5070, or basically x070 cards are around £460, this is max I could do. My 3070 got old, playing remake of Dead Space is at times like slide show.
I could grab 4070s, but I think its better to get new gen now, as I skipped 4xxx series.

I'm not greedy, 40-50fps in 4K is fine for my 48CX OLED, so 5070 FE would be nice, as long as nvidia keeps the same price range for new x070. I know tp likes to push the limits, but for me, I settle at 40fps :)

120fps is the new 60fps.

Your trip to the states may not coincide with black-friday.

It's rumored 5070 might be slightly faster than 4080, which means basically around the same raster as a 7900xtx.

Drivers are very good these days. No problems.

Its been like that every release: 4070 = 3080, 5070 = 4080
Always xx70 was about same as prev xx80 series.
So yeah, 5070 should be same or bit faster than 4080 and that means it would be around twice as fast as my 3070. Kinda.. :)

Probably more like 2000's, the cards were fine, just early days of GPUs and AMD drivers were very hit or miss.
All companies have issues, Intel right now is in the fight of it's life, and not for the first time, Nvidia... Don't even get me started on their B.S.  Right now, AMD is the winning team, that said, if you are used to certain brands things do run different. Bios settings differ, colors differ, etc..

Wait till it's closer to buying time.
Who knows what will be out, available, and not being scalped by them. You really can't plan computer parts shopping that far ahead.

BTW, I run on Radeon 7900 XT, but was on a GTX 1070 before that, also ran Radeon 480, 580 and 590, all ran just fine. Years ago AMD open sourced their drivers and it's been vastly better for drivers.

Oh, don't forget you need a CPU capable of pushing a 4080 or better or you'll bottleneck the GPU, and if you bottleneck it too much, it can actually slow your entire system.

i3 12100F, dont need anything higher. I could spend another £150 just to gain 8 fps.

You'll get alot more fps with 13900k or 12900k. 30-50% more

No you won't.
I mean 90% of the game would gain extra 5-8fps. I looked into it, not worth the cost.

Well if you're talking about casual games yea.  but Games games, esp0rrs stuff, you get alot more fps.

The frame dips are also much better, so even if the average fps might be the same, the 1% and 0.1% lows are higher fps, such that you perceive fewer latency spikes. Overall smoother game play @ similar average fps.

With an 12th gen I3?
I could see an XTX not just bottlenecking the gpu but kneecapping that cpu at the same time. I doubt it can really push it.

I agree with most cinematic games it's probably fine. I think it's a good time to just get a 13900k or kf.

I heard Llann has been in her cave playing non stop borderlands on her new 7800x3d.

tp, what about that rumored RX 8800 XT - is that gonna be good?
RX 8800 XT = 4080?

RX 8800 XT = 4080?

It's rumored to be faster than the 7900xt so somewhere around 4080/ 7900xtx.

XTX is a good bit faster than 4080 in raster as well. So, don't think it'll hit xtx level.

Everyone is hoping it's $500, but if it's $600, it'll sell ok, but not breaking/ making any waves.

Off-topic question about GPU usage because I don't wanna create a new thread just to ask.

Can someone explain to me why watching a 4K 120fps movie via VLC I am using less than 20% of my GPU, but when I'm watching a YouTube video in Firefox it uses over 60% of my GPU?

For reference I am running Win10 with a 2080 Super

What 4K 120fps movie, do you mean, 23.976fps movie into 120hz refresh monitor?

60% of the gpu is probably at the lower clock, it's not using 60% at its highest clock.
