Modem Making Noise Question
« on: Wed, 27 November 2024, 08:34:52 »
I am looking for an external SSD hard drive.

I have always trusted WD drives, but are there better choices in the SSD realm? I see a lot of Samsung and Crucial gear for sale.

Mostly it will be used to store music and photos, so long-term durability is most important and speed is less so.

Thanks!

But actually, he thought as he re-adjusted the Ministry of Plenty’s figures, it was not even forgery. It was merely the substitution of one piece of nonsense for another. Most of the material that you were dealing with had no connexion with anything in the real world, not even the kind of connexion that is contained in a direct lie. Statistics were just as much a fantasy in their original version as in their rectified version. A great deal of the time you were expected to make them up out of your head.
For example, the Ministry of Plenty’s forecast had estimated the output of boots for the quarter at 145 million pairs. The actual output was given as sixty-two millions. Winston, however, in rewriting the forecast, marked the figure down to fifty-seven millions, so as to allow for the usual claim that the quota had been overfulfilled. In any case, sixty-two millions was no nearer the truth than fifty-seven millions, or than 145 millions.
Very likely no boots had been produced at all. Likelier still, nobody knew how many had been produced, much less cared. All one knew was that every quarter astronomical numbers of boots were produced on paper, while perhaps half the population of Oceania went barefoot. And so it was with every class of recorded fact, great or small. Everything faded away into a shadow-world in which, finally, even the date of the year had become uncertain. --George Orwell, 1984

The seagate one? That is only for xbox, not usb interface.

They're all about the same because realistically most computers don't even have USB C to get the fastest data rate.

And if you're not running programs from it, you don't need to buy the fastest "inside guts"

They're not as fast as desktop drives because usbc mostly taps out at 10gigabit, so, 1.5gigabyte/s peak.

In desktop ssds they use 4x pcie gen 3/ 4 / 5, so That's 7 - 14 gigabyte/s peak (NOT RELEVANT for external drives). You would need a 40GBit-80GBit usbc port, which are rare.

Tp4 would recommend the 1TB SK Hynix Beetle. Looks cool. Not cheap.

Or the Sandisk 2TB for $109 on amazon right now.

Don't buy Samsung, way overpriced.

To re-phrase my request, with durability as my primary criterion and willingness to spend "somewhat" more for quality, what brand(s) should I consider?

In the SSD realm I tend to see Samsung, Crucial, Sandisc, and WD most often. USB 3.1 or 3.2 is adequate, and looks are unimportant.

SK Hynix has the same quality as samsung.  They're a major nand oem out of korea.

Durability.

Tp4 does not anticipate any problems with any common brands, most people break the ports from dropping them, bending/cracking, than from the drive itself dying.

Sandisk extreme pro 2tb for $167,   Again, over kill.  The regular Sandisk 2TB for $109 is best value right now on amazon. The smaller 1TB has a dragon on it.

There's a sandisk extreme (non pro) 2TB for $129. Silly product stacks, you decide.

The fastest fast fast drives require usb C 40gbit ports that you probably don't have, and probably won't find ever on outdoor pcs.

The ultimate question is, Does fohat really need this,  over say a 7900xtx.

When all else fails,  7900xtx is the solution.

I decided on the Samsung T7 Shield.

Modem Making Noise Question
« Reply #6 on: Wed, 27 November 2024, 18:30:04 »
Decided not to start a new topic.

My (AT&T Arris) fiber cable router is 4 years old and it is starting to make noise. Random ticks, or clicks, whatever, I would use the term "chirps"

It is completely random and stays quiet for a long time then wakes up. May be more common in the evening?

AT&T help line and chat are useless and will not respond to my inquiries.

If the unit is certain to be failing I can take it to the AT&T store on the other side of town and ask for a new one. There is a white modem (?) firmly attaced to the interior wall and a seperate black router (?) sitting on the floor beside it. Should I ask for a service call?

Thanks!

Demonic possession, visit your local asian apothecary, they got this pouch of tea-egg seasoning that you boil with 6 eggs, then you offer said eggs to GuanYu statue or photo alter with 3 incense sticks. You then eat 1 of the 6 eggs, leaving 5 eggs. Take the ashes from the incense sticks put them into luke warm boiled water, swish around. Drink a mouthful but DO NOT SWALLOW. Spit in a straight line horizontally in front of the demonically possessed cable modem, and grab its antennas with both hands, DEMAND the demons leave said device.

If you're renting the modem, a service call *should* be free as they control everything up to the modem. If you own the modem they stop at the outside wall.

My experience however has been they WILL find some reason to charge you for the service call even if it involves unnecessary work. Had one guy rewire everything from the wall to the computer (single computer) just so he could charge the customer. All the wiring was brand new and installed by one of their own service guys on their own time. Nothing wrong with it, just his way of making sure they could charge that fee.

If it was me, I'd take it in myself.
I'd also probably later buy my own modem and return it to save on the monthly rental fee if they have one (get it fixed before you do this).

Is the unit fairly certain to be dying?

Probably.
Dying or not it's a problem if it bothers you, especially if itis a new noise.

Silicone a larger heatsink to the main chip, look for Vrms, silicone those ramsinks, look for capacitors and inductors, m0ar silicone.

Any silicone will do, the clear outdoor/ wall ones work fine.

But given the price of silicone and heatsinks, you might as well just buy a new one.

Probably cost vs need.

Fiber would cost me twice as much for 35% more speed. Meh. My internet is more than fast enough.

Same here, my fiber is $75 from AT&T, FAR TOO MUCH.

Our city is building out fiber, but it won't be here until 2026 - unless MAGA succeeds in outlawing non-corporate internet.

So power it off and redo the connections...

If it works, great, if not, call and complain again, I'd have done it while on the phone with them just to really force the issue.

I'd have done it while on the phone with them

I did this, and there was no noise until abour 5 minutes after I hung up. It comes and goes at random.

Would AT&T punish me for buying my own modem router and plugging it in to their ONT? Is the BGW210-700 still a decent piece of gear?

Thank you for your help.

They won't punish you, but there might be an activation procedure that they have to do to allow your device i.d. to work on their network.

You will have to register it with them, no big deal though.

Is this fiber to the home, or fiber then a coax into the home?
Coax should be an easy swap (probably but if it's fiber to the home you can't swap it, you MUST use their equipment. I'd call back and keep reporting it and say it's LOUD. At some point one will take you serious or get tired of dealing with you and get it replaced. Especially if your contract is almost up.
