I would choose Austin Texas. Pretty centrally located, local for a lot of GHers,  and most important (for me), close enough for me to visit my family.

What sort of stuff happens at these keycons? Is it something worth flying out from CO for or would it just be weird? haha. One thing I have rolling in my head is remembering when the Olympics were in town, you could go to events at malls and things where everyone was trading Olympic Pins and showing their pin collections. Wonder if it will be kind of like that with artisan keycaps?

You don't need to pay for admission but in the past there's been an option to donate to help pay for the venue, I'm not sure if anything like this has been set up for 2017 yet.

People bring their own boards and artisans. Giveaways sometimes happen but this is mainly supposed to a large meet up. Fendent has a casting demo set up but I don't know what else is set in stone yet.

No estimate on how many people will be there but there may be some artisan trading but I wouldn't think a ton would be happening.

Just for the record, "geekhack" isn't really an entity in the same way a lot of other sites/forums might be.  We don't have any revenue sources, sponsorships, or ads.  So where some sites might either have items donated by sponsors or be able to fund giveaways, we would have to pay for that ourselves (meaning, Hoffman's personal bank account).  This sort of thing has happened in the past and I wouldn't write it off completely, I just want to give you an idea of how it works.  Often there are freebies, either from vendors or community members donating things, but it's not a guarantee.  The fun in these events is meeting people and seeing loads of keyboards and gear that you otherwise might never see in person, anyway.
