The bended MK's economy.
« on: Fri, 01 January 2021, 16:20:37 »

The world is in the worst century's pandemic. Yet, MK key-caps—are sold in thousands. If a standard set costs one-hundred, we are talking of orders in the range of 100,000 USD or more each.
Why do you think this is happening?

Economic collapse happens in stages.

That sounds like a possible explanation.

Not sure about the rest of the world but here you can't go out to eat or drink, you can't go to the gym, play sports or whatever, and many people are working from home with no fuel or parking costs to pay.  That's a lot of money not being spent that otherwise would be, if this is your situation why not buy some new caps for your keyboard that's seeing more use than ever before?

Somewhat related but yea this ^

People are in investing in their home office, gamers are investing in their rigs, etc

So by default I guess people who were getting into the hobby before or looking for a new one, gained a lot of spare time over the pandemic and are spending their hard earned shekels on trivial things like keycaps and diy kits.

I agree with your comments. Actually, I just bought a mic, earphones set, and a new chair, because I am using my home-office more than ever. I am also resuming the build of a couple of custom boards that I had on hold for a while. I am sure more of you guys, are also spending a bit more on home-office stuff recently.

Yeah, this. I have spoken to friends who have commented that they are saving large amounts of money because they cannot go out.

If your finances have not been negatively impacted by the pandemic, then your disposable income has probably gone up.

Of course, lots of people have been wiped out by this, but the effects are very lumpy across society.

The stimulus was not enough to change lives, would you rather be broke, or would you rather be broke with a new keyboard or Playstation?

If you aren't broke and you're stuck at home, may as well treat yourself.

I've bought so much stuff during the first lockdown. So much, and none of it was strictly necessary.

I should probably buy a MK or two. My last related purchase was in 2012.
(...)Whereas back then I wrote about the tyranny of the majority, today I'd combine that with the tyranny of the minorities. These days, you have to be careful of both. They both want to control you. The first group, by making you do the same thing over and over again. The second group is indicated by the letters I get from the Vassar girls who want me to put more women's lib in The Martian Chronicles, or from blacks who want more black people in Dandelion Wine.
I say to both bunches, Whether you're a majority or minority, bug off! To hell with anybody who wants to tell me what to write. Their society breaks down into subsections of minorities who then, in effect, burn books by banning them. All this political correctness that's rampant on campuses is b.s.

The people who still have jobs have tons of extra money because they aren't going out, and even poorer people are starting to stunt on deskware since they're spending more time in front of computers. It's a lot like how game consoles weathered the recession.
