I like it. I don't see how a custom layout would make a difference. The lighter keys are on the pinky finger. No matter how you cut it, that is always going to be your weakest finger. My topre is variable and it just feels right.

The wide colemak/dvorak layouts come to mind.WASD isn't as issue if you use ESDF for gaming like you should be
