QFR Plate mod.

A few days ago i posted the some photos of the progress of my Ghetto Green switch mod for my QFR. I got some advice to buy a phantom plate but due to the availability of them i was thinking why not try and mod my Stock QFR plate for easy switch removal. I was thinking maybe a small file or my dermel.

Do you guys know of anyone who has tire this?

You're crazy this **** is steel... If you were paid minimum wage, this would still take you something like 8 hours..

THe cost of buying a plate was only something around $15...

You would spend 8*$10 in labor for something that was $15??

It won't be anywhere near $15 in the Classifieds.  You don't need to cut that much, more like 2 scooped areas per side of each rectangular hole.  Still a fair amount of work.

probably want to use a disk cutter with the grind wheel instead of dremel.

Dremel would take you Forever.... the plate is quite thick

@Reckthor: this idea has occired to me also. I would love to see your results. While I don't think it will take 8 hours (number pulled out of ass?), I do think it might take a while. Also, I agree with Ray, plates were never sold anywhere near $15 (also number pulled out of ass), and even if they were, there's no where to buy them for that now. The plates that were made before are scarce, and it seems to be pretty tough to find one in the classifieds. I'm not necessarily saying I think it will work, but I say go for it if you want to try.

@tp4tissue: Have you ever even used a dremel or a grinder? How the hell would you use  grinder to do this? The grinding wheels are usually 3-4 inches. You can't get that in between the switch holes. Also, I don't think the OP is doing this to save money. it's not like you can just go buy a universal plate willy nilly. If the OP can't find one to buy, then his alternative is to try the mod himself. What does valuing your time at minimum wage have to do with this? And a $15 plate? Seriously?

If i wanted it to be done fast I would use my drill-press with a cutting bit and cut a half circle in each place needed. That might take 20 mins. But i want to keep nice lines. the reason for a file.

I considered doing a similar mod myself, although as the only plate keyboard I have is without switches it's not an urgent task. It may take a little while, but not every job has to translate to an hourly rate. I cut my own stainless steel switch tools with a Dremel, it took a while longer than brass, but not a great deal longer, and if it can cut 1.2mm stainless, it can probably cut the plate steel, which is thicker but not stainless. Very interested in your results.

If you enjoy your craft, then even if it costs you $5 an hour instead of save you, its a cheap hobby. If you don't enjoy crafting, then every task you can't pay for is a sad chore.
