Windows 10, Anyone tried it?
« on: Thu, 04 June 2015, 02:26:32 »
I keep seeing the icon in my task bar on my desktop and was debating on getting it.  Has anyone used it?

My current specs are

Asus P8P67 Evo
i7-2600k
8Gb ram
680 GTX factory OC after market cooler
3 HDDs 74Gb, and 300Gb raptor and another random Hitachi 400Gb drive
OG Kishsaver, Razer Orbweaver clears and reds with blue LEDs, and Razer Naga Epic.   "Great minds crawl in the same sewer"  Uncle Rich

I haven't tried it (too lazy to set up a dual boot), but I did reserve a copy. It's free after all, and I'm pretty sure I read somewhere you need 10 for DX12 support.

And in general, it seems to be well received, so far.

You can reserve a copy, and decide after it's fully released if you want to upgrade or not, according to Microsoft.

The one thing I'm curious about is, if you install it from that icon, does it work as a proper upgrade from Windows 7? Or do you have to reinstall all your programs and ****??

I tried the first beta they put out to the public and it was pretty fantastic, think Win7 on hella drugs

That icon will just reserve it, it is not actually available until 29-Jul.

I'm a "Microsoft Insider" apparently, and I have downloaded the ISO, but not done anything with it (yet).

I've been told at work I can get a new Windows 10 PC as soon as they are available.

I tired the first release for it was pretty mic I'm used to windows 8 anyway but it was to me anyway 8 without the metro and a better implementation of a start menu, I'll get it when it's out as I understand for the upgrade it will work as the windows 8 one did you have the option to keep all your programmes and files or start fresh, it also says what's compatable and what's not now if you check the box in the task bar

I have used the technical previews off and on since last year when it was made available. I had a Core 2 Duo rig that I was running it on exclusively (dual core, 4GB of RAM, and a decent-ish 3+ year-old video card) and it hummed along just fine. Much, much faster than Windows 7 on the same hardware. I was pretty happy with it. If you've used and understand Windows 8, it is very similar, but with some new additions and the blending of some Windows 7 throwbacks.

It'll be a good OS, just like Windows 8 was and 7 before it.

It was funny to see it appears on my "not so legal" windows computer.

A mate is using it for a while not a lot of problem just a few softwares that aren't compatible yet.

reserved it, what I'm so curious about is the graphic improvement which will be delivered along with DX12
This might just give us more time space until the next pc upgrade

I can see people are still so fussy about new layouts and stuff, for me it's just your willingness to change the habit
I can switch between windows and mac daily with no problem

but the start button is back right?

Same  :)) maybe then I will have a "genuine" copy of windows 10? I dunno.

I am more concerned when the Windows phone OS upgrade will arrive tbh.

Yeah the win10 and win10 mobile stuff looks legit cool... if they can get the apps and **** sorted out, I could see myself switching, if there was a 100+gb version anyway

I've been using it for the past few months on my laptop, and I've just started using it on my desktop too. I think it's a decent enough compromise between the best parts of windows 7 and 8.
Best new feature is the smart window snapping. It was good enough that I went back to using one monitor instead of two.

I'll be making the switch at the end of the month, but there's still no way I'm linking a microsoft account. The day microsoft stop allowing local accounts will be the day I start using Debian full-time  ;)

I'm pretty sure it would be a lot cheaper just to buy a new copy of windows 10... If they want everyone on the same OS, legally, they might as well upgrades for pirates...

ARe you comparing them on an SSD or HDD

This is now a TP SSD techinfo thread!  :p

I reserved a copy like it asked. As much as I like Windows 7, there does come a time when you have to move on and for me I think Windows 10 will be that. I am a little reserved at changing but I just keep reminding myself that I originally hated windows 7.

The change from 7 to 8 was brutal. So many annoying menus. I spent so much time just making it function like windows 7 (hate metro).

Windows 10 seems more interesting.

I'll upgrade when it comes out. I felt windows 8 was faster than 7 (and they improved boot times A LOT) which was nice.

Or that all windows programs / menus enter into this weird full screened program with no exit button... I have to kill it with task manager. I changed the windows metro back to a start menu and disabled as much of the windows 8 features as possible to basically have windows 7 with the speed of windows 8.

Stuff like my mouse sticking to the side of the screen was just so stupid.Especaially with dual monitor... Why would I want my mouse hanging in the middle of the screen every time I try and move between screens? "Well just move the mouse really fast to get it to the other screen"

an ssd doesn't actually do the ui rendering....

optimized graphics stacks, simplified ui, learned prefetching, and builtin compositing profiles all provide a faster ux experience.

win7 is a joke performancewise nowadays (isn't it like 8 yrs old now?).

So far, I've reserved it on both my FX8350 and X6 1100T rigs (both Win7), waiting for the reservation icon to show up on my i7 3960X rig (Win8.1) and will have to fire up my AM2 (Win7) and see if it shows up there as well. All my rigs are up and running with genuine Windows licenses, always ready and looking forward to a free upgarde.

Reserved on my i7 3770k rig.   I'm pretty pumped.  I haven't played around with it yet (lazy) but it will be a day 1 install for me.  I was an early adopter of win8 and had to learn to teach it to your "average" consumer as well as fix all the crazy issues people had.  Yay for working in geek squad and walk out working.  Won't complain though. Free copy of windows 8 pro. I7 3770k for free and a haf 902 case for free among other things.

I hope I get to upgrade to windows 10 on my work laptop some time.  (Probably a very long time)

So its not really faster,   its just faster at being prettier.
