For some reason these particular words were offensive to me.  Like..too pompous and entitled or something.  I would have much preferred stuff like "Pretzel", "Hangover", "Rebar", "Frog", "Full tang construction".
I got a bit of the same, but offensive is a bit too strong I feel. The choice of words certainly felt... Pompous and a bit forced, like "look at how intellectual and deep I am" forced.

not even lying, my handwriting is pretty much as temperamental.  i've always thought it's kind of odd so THIS IS REALLY REFRESHING THANK YOU

i've been playing around with this noodler's ahab with a flex nib for a week or two now.  i still need to spend some time getting things set up just right, but it usually writes pretty well and for twenty bucks it's hard to beat.

I don't know if anyone else journals, but I really like using micron .005s (and prismacolors from time to time). Since I have a smallish journal/planner, I like to be able to write a lot and these pens let me achieve a perfect tiny text that fits a whole day's worth of stuff.

So I always liked Uniballs and Pilot pens but I want to make the jump to a fountain pen. But I'd like to start in the shallow end and buy an affordable one before I get something like tsangan or longweight. Can anyone recommend me an affordably price fountain pen?

I'm bringing this quote and this thread back from the graveyard. I finally got a Lamy Safari, matte black, with medium nib. And I'm currently using the blue ink cartridge that comes with the pen.

Is that an AL-star Safari?
I saw some on display once, they look so nice. Didn't get one tho since I barely even use my Vista.

Also, there was a store in Italy which had pretty much every expensive fountain pen you could want on display. Pelikan demonstrators, droooool....

No sir, just a Charcoal Black Lamy Safari. I had a blast just trying to figure out how to make a script "Captain BadAss" look nice. Going to use it at work when I need to take notes :D

Oh, the ones in aluminium ones look damn good, I fear they may look better than my Vista, especially when you compare the Vista to more expensive demonstrators. It's kind of a ****ty demonstrator, but the nibs are great.

Yeah those Al-Stars look really sharp but I just wanted to start with a Safari. Kinda fell in love at first touch. There's a pen store downtown where I got to play with a ton of different pens.

i have that safari in a medium nib.

absolutely hate it. awkward to hold and the nib is scratchy as hell. i went in knowing the finger placement wasnt for everybody but i didnt think i'd hate it that much.

i like my twsbi mini more, but that's in fine so not really a comparison.

I wish we had proper pen stores, if there are any they sure aren't in this part of the country.

Although it's probably for the best, since it's a lot harder to control impulse purchases when you get to see it for yourself and have the possibility of buying it and walking out the door with it, rather than looking at pictures, having to go through payment procedure and then wait for delivery.

Hm, i never really noticed that but maybe that's why I'm new at pens too. We'll see how it goes. I know the Cross rollerball I got as a gift is really nice, but I don't like the ink as much. Although this new Fisher Space Pen is pretty nifty.

That twsbi mini is pretty cool. I like how its clear/see through like that. Does the nib feel smoother?

Yeah....exactly. I gotta be careful with going to this place lol.

I was really close to buying a twsbi demonstrator, but then I stopped writing as much, so there was not much need for one.

Although I have both a medium and a fine nib for my Vista, they both feel nice, but that might be because I came from a horrible Parker Vector.

Just a question, especially for fountain pen users.  Do you keep a personal journal... journal book or electronic (e.g. The Journal")?

i used to keep a personal journal, in which i wrote long useless rants in english using only fountain pens and only brown ink.
(...)Whereas back then I wrote about the tyranny of the majority, today I'd combine that with the tyranny of the minorities. These days, you have to be careful of both. They both want to control you. The first group, by making you do the same thing over and over again. The second group is indicated by the letters I get from the Vassar girls who want me to put more women's lib in The Martian Chronicles, or from blacks who want more black people in Dandelion Wine.
I say to both bunches, Whether you're a majority or minority, bug off! To hell with anybody who wants to tell me what to write. I'm necroing this thread. I like it better than the favorite pens/pencils thread. Come at me bro :P

I picked up a Lamy Safari Vista aka the Safari Demonstrator with a Fine nib while on vacation. I really like the fine nib, plus the clear body with the refillable insert looks really cool.

I think for the time being, I'm set on pens and pencils. Right now I'm rocking:

- Charcoal Lamy Safari with a medium nib
- Lamy Safari Vista Demonstrator with a fine nib
- Pentel GraphGear 500, .5mm
- Rotring 600, silver, .7mm
- Rotring 600, black, .5mm

Kind of tempted by the Rotring 800 massdrop but....$40ish is a bit too much for a pencil in my opinion. $30 max is my comfort zone right now.

retractable tip? oh yeah.

had the exact same pen in black color. sold it because it wasn't very well fit for my hands: a bit too slippery, a bit too heavy.
now thinking about which desk pen to purchase. the obvious answer would be Platinum, but its nib is too fine for my taste. i like the flow of european m's. on my previous workplace i just used a lamy safari m as a desk pen: its cap was stuck in my ex monitor stand, so it was sorta desk pen stand.
also was tempted to try a few ink rollerball pens, but said no to myself, as i only need one writing instrument. just like i need one keyboard.

I think retractable tips are also called hooded nibs but someone can correct me if I'm wrong. I see the convenience factor but having played with one last week I'm not a big fan.

No, hooded nibs are like the Parker 51 pen while retractable tips are like the Pilot Vanishing Point. The VP is like a ballpoint where the nib completely retracts. The hooded nib is hooded so only the tip of the nib is sticking out of the section. I like the VP and I've been debating for months if I should just get it.

Also... I am very much a believer of the Shroud Nib...  it was great in the parker 51.. i no gotz one..

but I've tried mock ups of it like the Hero series.. i got a few of those.. and they're fantastic..

THey start up quick every time.. never drops  GREAT flow...

I have no idea how to find a GOOD condition Parker 51 online, since they're so old, it's one of those things I believe I'd probably want to do in person, unless there's someone on GH that can help me out...

Anyh00t...   Yea Parker 51 technology is definitely solid..  the bulb filler is also almost completely fail proof ontop of giving much greater capacity.

I just copped a P51 on eBay for $45. It worked as soon as I got it. You just need to make sure the pictures look proper and get someone who's knowledgeable to help you hunt. I asked one of the major contributors on FPN's Parker sub-forum to give me a hand.

If you're going to go with eBay hunting for P51s, try and find some that have a writing sample with them. And proper pictures that you're comfortable with. However, if they have writing samples, the seller probably knows what he has and the price will go up accordingly. That's what I saw when I was hunting for the P51. Not sure if that applies to them overall.

as far as we know it, the most common shape in the universe is a donut / cylinder

Coupled with the mass proliferation of pornography and the general priority status of mating,  it's no wonder that people sees  everything as phallic...

the pilot vp is a little heavy and slick, but nice to use when hitting the road especially and wanting to use a fp. 51's, 21's, 41's, 61's, etc. are all hooded and are just a little bit of a different beast--- i like them. depending on the nib many will write just like a bp.

pelikan p1's have hooded nibs and are pretty sweet as well. the chinese hero 51, 21 knock-offs for the money are not bad either-- albeit a steel nib.

the af 51's, 21's are fairly bullet proof as are the parker 45's to where you can fill them with almost anything and they will keep on going.

unless when buying a 51 vac filler-- buyer beware as they typically need to be refurbished (unless noted otherwise). the aeromatic filler 51's (if you are going for a 51) are a safer bet. not all 51's have gold nibs either-- the specials had steel nibs, but are still pretty decent. as long as the iridium is still intact you should be good to go. Worse case you might just need to smooth if a little scratchy.

the pilot vp is a little heavy and slick, but nice to use when hitting the road especially and wanting to use a fp.

Worse case you might just need to smooth if a little scratchy.

i got dozens.........

Does the 51 work better with that original -special acidic ink-  or was that only for a limited run of -special 51s-

i use noodlers ink in mostly all my fp's and i use the eel (many colors) in my vac, piston fillers, etc.-- works like a champ.

i have vintage ink, but i really do not use except in a af or an eyedropper for fear it might clog.

you should flush every so often...........

Any recommendations for a notebook? Primarily I am looking for grid paper and hardbound, size is secondary. So far I have tried moleskine (junk paper) and Vela (ok to decent paper). Always looking to to try out new notebooks.

And my fountain pens:

is that all?
(...)Whereas back then I wrote about the tyranny of the majority, today I'd combine that with the tyranny of the minorities. These days, you have to be careful of both. They both want to control you. The first group, by making you do the same thing over and over again. The second group is indicated by the letters I get from the Vassar girls who want me to put more women's lib in The Martian Chronicles, or from blacks who want more black people in Dandelion Wine.
I say to both bunches, Whether you're a majority or minority, bug off! To hell with anybody who wants to tell me what to write. Their society breaks down into subsections of minorities who then, in effect, burn books by banning them. All this political correctness that's rampant on campuses is b.s.

I love Rhodia paper so check out Rhodia Webnotebooks. And Quo Vadis as well. I've never tried them but people seem to love Leuchtturm1917 notebooks. They're often said to be Moleskins with nice, fountain friendly paper.

What's the center pen?

Thanks, I was eyeing a Leuchtturm notebook (I don't think I spoted grid option in Webnotebook or habana...I should recheck though).

Center pen is a pilot stargazer, fine nib

Necrothread arise!  Both pen threads have posts that were last made in the antediluvian era, so I just picked this one.

From top to bottom:

Livescribe 3 - Very convenient, and with the right apps, your tablet becomes your writing journal, but you can still write on paper.

Karas Customs Bolt - very nice, though if I got it again, not sure I would get brass.  Figured it would look nice in brass with the bolt, and it does, but being my daily, it gets a lot of use.

Embassy Pen - lost out on being my daily by virtue of one of the reasons I bought it - it doesn't post.

I have several others, but those are my go-tos in my EDC.

"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada
