The fine art of writing: pens, inks, papers, correction fluids
« on: Fri, 10 August 2012, 06:18:47 »
The shaving thread is too hardcore for me. Most people who appreciate a good keyboard know to appreciate quality things, so such threads are natural for Geekhack. How about good writing instruments? What do you guys and gals use?

In high school I would use cheap disposable fountain pens, I don't remember why I liked them so much but I did. Probably just because they were different! In university I was writing with Unicomp gel pens until about 2006 when the quality went suddenly to garbage, and the fine writing on the package indicated that the company had a new owner. I switched to Pilot gels, which I would put in a hollow, rubber-coated tube [1] to hold as I broke my right thumb and could not hold a regular-diameter pen. This lasted until just a few weeks ago when a neighbour gave to me a $80+ Pelican fountain pen. This pen is so smooth that I don't write with it: I just lay it loosely upon my fingers and drag it across the page! This is the only thin writing instrument that I have been able to use since the injury. As a bonus, my handwriting has improved dramatically. I don't have a proper filler, though, so I empty ink cartridges into a test tube and fill from there. I'm flexible with papers but I am particular to Pilot correction fluid.

What do other fastidious geeks write with?

[1] The first and second version of the tube looked too much like a penis, complete with veins, due to the way the rubber would dry. I would get many comments, some flattering and some not. It did not help that I would often have my pet rat's tail hanging out of my shirt sleeve during that time period. No, I was not very popular.

That's funny! It was uni....something...

What would we do without Google? It was Uniball! This was the pen:

Sweet. I love ink! I'm just a beginner, but I've got a couple colors of j. herbin. Right now I'm using a glass pen that I ordered online... from somewhere, can't remember off the top of my head. I am soooo disappointed with my pen! It won't hold very much ink and it will seldom pass the ink it does hold onto the paper cleanly or consistently. I've been taking a dremel polish to the tip to no avail.

The ink though... I love it. You can use it to paint with if you dilute it down =). I have bleu pervenche and bouton d'or. Blue and a yellow-orange. I mix them sometimes to make some nice greens.

I wish I had a glass dipping pen that worked! I'll probably get a fountain pen some time, but keyboards and peripherals have most of my attention right now.

Thanks for showing! I really like the way traditional notebooks look, but I don't like the idea that pages are permanently bound. I've been lusting after one of these ( http://www.levenger.com/Circa-Notebooks-326/Circa-Notebooks-339/Bomber-Jacket-Circa-Leather-Foldover-Notebook-Core-5962.aspx ) for awhile. Anyone have experience with circa notebooks?

I love writing and doodling in my Moleskine journals with blank stock. One pocket size and the other quite large. For writing tools, almost always thin sharpies. Don't know why I like them so much. Hoping to get a very nice pen or possibly calligraphy style pens.

I have two Pilot S20 pencils (one red, one brown), which are basically the best pencils I've ever owned. Wood body mechanicals. I have a leather bound, refillable journal from No Boundaries (noboundariesbooks.com), which I got from the maker in Seattle, WA. (Both the leather and the paper were sourced from the U.S. if you're into that kind of thing)

P.S.
Apparently nothing but the contact is on the site. Anyways you can email him and order one of the journals. I can post a picture later if any one is interested.

i do most of my work/brainstorming with dry erase and as such have been trying to find good thin dry erase, so far i've found
srx markers good, and in a pinch (and cuz i havev literally a pound of them) i'll use the quartet markersr, other than that i use hb #2 pencils to hammer out ideas on paper and i must have a razer sharp point that i get with a stadler sharpener.

btw the only thing i know about pelikans is that they're spelled with a k, here's the website

You can! Just email the guy on noboundariesbooks.com and I'm pretty sure he'll let you buy a journal. You can get the S20 and Sevenroll from JetPens.com or jstationary.com (just pencils).

I love my fountain pen, I have very bad hand writing but I really enjoy the smoothness of the Mont Blanc. I buy a new ink each month, currently on the Alfred Hitchcock blood red :) Leatherbound Mokeskin for taking notes :)

The pages are leather bound. This way you can untie, remove, and add sections as you see fit, up to five sections. Album is below.

I'm a bit of a Muji fan so I like using Muji gel pens like this one:
http://www.muji.net/store/cmdty/detail/4548718369102?sc_bh=param1

For notebooks, I like using Whitelines, as the name suggests, rather than having white paper with dark lines, they use light gray paper with white lines instead.

Yeah the Japanese have done writing instruments and notebooks (for actually taking notes) better than over here. Whitelines and their casual writing instruments are just superior to those stateside :'(

I'm currently in the process of finding a good daily use pen for the office. I'm sick of using the crap that my company provides. At this time, I like the Pilot Hi-Tec-C gel pens (0.4 or 0.5 mm) and the Pentel EnerGel Euro (0.35 mm) pen. I just got an order from JetPens, including a Platinum Preppy fountain pen. It's probably going to be like a gateway drug for me to slip into the deep dark underworld of fountain pens. Great, another money pit hobby to get into.

The last time this topic came up, I ended up buying three .5mm Uniball Signos in black, blue, and green, one .38mm Uniball Signo in dark green, and a 0.5mm Zebra Sarasa in black from Jetpens. Don't do that to me again. Or do. The Signos are fantastic, though I mainly use the blue for work and the greens for everything else. I haven't touched the black much. The Sarasa is a good pen, but I haven't really touched it because of the Signos. I also have three 1.0mm Pilot G2s in black, and one 0.7mm in red, but the 1.0s are a little too thick for me. The funny thing is that prior to buying these (thanks to you guys) I exclusively used pencils. Pens annoyed me because I couldn't erase.
Risen from the dead for a model F.

Wyse buy colors were GSY for the dark grey, GBA for the light grey, and BBI for the fonts.

Twsbi makes some great pens and has amazing customer service.  I have the Twsbi Diamond 540.  It is a piston filler and EVERY part of the pen can be disassembled for cleaning or repair.  Nibs can be exchanged without leaking any ink.  www.twsbi.com

I always stick with cheaper pens as I'm always losing them. G2 and Hi-Tec-C are my favorites.

So I bought a pilot varsity- why didn't anyone tell me how often fountain pens were before? I also picked up a Pilot 78G off eBay and a bunch of blue ink samples from GouletPens.
Risen from the dead for a model F.

Wyse buy colors were GSY for the dark grey, GBA for the light grey, and BBI for the fonts.

HAH! If I ever buy something from Glissant I'm not sure which will be more exciting, the package or the doodle. I love your art!
