Help getting into keyboards
« on: Sun, 09 July 2017, 18:46:50 »
If possible could some nice person go over what I should expect from keyboards and the community in general. Could someone also please recommend me a good tkl keyboard. I don't care about RGB or any of that. Thank you

If you want TKL and not RGB type keyboards, I would recommend looking at the Code MX Clears TKL for MX and RealForce 87U for Topre. (Note that I am the same way, not a big fan of RGB.)

I am much more a Topre person so the 87U recommendation (especially a 55g 87U) are strong recommendations. I am not as much in the MX scene but the Code is the MX TKL I know the best, and like.

There are other really good keyboards less than TKL but those are my recommendations for TKL keyboards.

It is the same when you are stupid.

You should expect keyboards to make letters appear on your screen.

You should expect the community to have 1 more opinion than there are members.

And I second the Realforce 87U Topre TKL keyboard, either in 45g or 55g uniform.
WhiteFox (Gateron Brown) -- Realforce 87U 45g -- Realforce 104UG (Hi Pro 45g) -- Realforce 108US 30g JIS -- HHKB Pro 2 -- IBM Model M ('90) -- IBM Model M SSK ('87) -- NMB RT-101 & RT-8255C+ (Hi-Tek Space Invaders) -- Chicony KB-5181 (Monterey Blue Alps) -- KPT-102 (KPT Alps) -- KUL ES-87 (62/65g Purple Zealios) -- CM QFR (MX Red) -- Apple Aluminum BT -- Realforce 23u Numpad -- Logitech K740 -- QSENN DT-35 -- Zenith Z-150 (Green Alps)

without your own research,  recommendations would be meaningless..

If you're completely unaware of anything at all,   then just get one of those $25 mechanical keyboards off amazon.

Play with it for a month,  and come back..

Yeah I guess try not to spend a lot of money unless you know what you like.  Maybe get something used?  I see a CM Storm Quickfire Rapid used for $60 on Amazon.  I used one of those for a few years with Cherry MX Brown switches and really liked it.  I also have a Filco Majestouch 2 TKL and it's a little better build quality than the CM Storm, but both are solid.  Leopolds are supposed to be good build quality too but I've never owned one.  I don't think you could really go wrong with any of those 3, and the switches you choose with it will probably make a bigger difference to you than the keyboard build quality.

If you don't know much about switches, just google "mechanical keyboard switch types" and there's tons of information.  Some are loud, others quiet, some take more force than others to actuate, some have a tactile "bump", others are "linear" and smooth.

There is one cheapish TKL called the Team Wolf ZhuQue on Amazon that will probably not feel as nice out of the box I would guess, but has the advantage of having hot-swappable switches, so if you want to try out other switch types you can do it later without soldering.

Really depends on how much money you want to spend, and how much experimentation you think you'll want to do to find what you like best.  You could even assemble your own and pick each component separately.  A lot of folks in the community do that, and it's easier than you'd think to do your first one, but can be quite pricey!

Anyway, welcome!  And good luck with your choice!

Welcome :)

Have you thought of 1800 layout?
They're only a little bit longer than TKL's.

But for TKL's the boards mentioned already are good choices.
