Which keyboards give you ASMR?
« on: Thu, 20 August 2020, 14:06:22 »
ASMR ("autonomous sensory meridian response") is a kind of delicious, pleasurable bodily response to certain kinds of sounds... like certain kinds of whispers, someone running through finger across a comb, etc.

You can see a video example of it here:

Which keyboards give you the greatest ASMR?

IBM Model M, especially my second one after a bolt mod. It seems to have dampened some of the higher pitch components after I tightened everything up.

I think it’s more of a matter of the switch. Like lubed gat inks and yellows sound amazing on basically anything

Pretty much any switch (besides clicky) can sound really nice, but I am usually wearing headphones and typing quickly enough that it’s hard to appreciate the sound of my keyboard.

Untrue. You just haven't heard it yet.

I watch ASMR, but I don't really experience it. I just watch ASMR to relax. So, to say that I just like the sound of a board, I like the sound of a lubed linear/tactile on a polycarbonate plate. There is something about it that nothing else can compare to.

I've experienced ASMRs in the past before it became a "thing". I don't get the sensations from any youtube videos or from keyboards for that matter. Have only experienced it very very lightly from watching an ASMR video, but not enough to really make me watch them more.

Not from keyboards. These things strike me as some of the least likely objects to generate it. Wrong frequencies, (both sonic and timing). It's like saying you can get ASMR from tapping your fingers on a table.

most switches are too loud for that unless they're really far away.

That one in the opening post was certainly bloody weird. And yeah, sounded icky with the strange glottal noises.

That one was just creepy for multiple reasons.

Edit: Is this a "what keyboard do you like thread" or do people seriously get this from keyboards?

Autonomous sensory meridian response (ASMR), sometimes auto sensory meridian response, is a tingling sensation that typically begins on the scalp and moves down the back of the neck and upper spine. A pleasant form of paresthesia, it has been compared with auditory-tactile synesthesia and may overlap with frisson.

In my opinion it's not the keyboard itself but switches, keycap profile and keyboard chassis to some extent. I like switches that are tactile, crisp in both sound and tactile feedback, and not overly hard to bottom out. From sound perspective the most pleasurable combo for me was SA keycaps + Kailh BOX Jade switches which produce deep and crisp click sound. I also tried Cherry and OEM profiles and I absolutely hate Cherry profile both in sound profile and just how short they are. Having said that I think OEM (for instance the one found on Pok3r keyboards) suits me perfectly and even after buying some GMK and SA keysets I keep typing on original Pok3r keycaps. I just love the material and profile. Coming back to switches BOX Jades are not the best experience because they work like a binary switch, it's either pressed or depressed. Due to the sharp force curve and light spring it's hard to have any travel, it just bottoms out immediately after overcoming the bump. BOX Navy switches on the other hand are too heavy but typing experience is nicer. I found a good middleground in Kailh BOX Pinks with Kailh BOX White/Jade springs. They are easy enough to press, they do not tire my hands after typing all day and they still produce nice sharp click. I'm using them with OEM keycaps and that's the best experience I ever had and I cannot match it ever since I started using this combo.
