Why do people even play facebook.

You got Starcraft 2, Halo, Arena'o'Valor.

I have always avoided Facebook like the plague, with one exception: a photographer friend who posts his work on Facebook.
Citizens United violates the essence of what made America a great country in its political system. Now it’s just an oligarchy, with unlimited political bribery being the essence of getting the nominations for president or to elect the president.
So now we’ve just seen a complete subversion of our political system as a payoff to major contributors, who want and expect and sometimes get favors for themselves after the election’s over.”

Facebook has a lot of important functions as much as much as internet peeps have to say. it definitely has singlehandedly connected millions and millions of people who had very little access to outside communication with whatsapp, optimization for like the world's crappiest devices and networks. at the end of the day it's still a super parasitic and snakey company and it's rooted within its business model. I still think it's pretty important though -- it's easy to reach a lot of people through messenger, a lot of events are created through facebook and you'd miss out on a lot if you didn't keep tabs on facebook. facebook groups are pretty niche and just as big or bigger than their respective subreddits, and it's another avenue to find good deals on used stuff. i'm hoping they come out with a higher end version of the quest 2 soon.

Yeah, a few years ago at Dragon Con I was pounced on by a woman panelist at a panel discussion on internet privacy issues who told me that I was "arrogant and coming from a position of great privilege" when I said that I loathed "social media" platforms and avoided using them altogether.

Everybody else learned it from Google, still the biggest and worst offender.

I was right in the demo for FB, but was never even tempted to so much as create a profile. I've had zero issues avoiding it for 18 years, the only time it ever even came up was when a job interview said they required a FB profile, which was enough for me to not be interested any longer.

Single handedly is the important part.
Pretty much all of that had been handled with other apps, many of those other sources would be bigger but Facebook sucked the life out of them. If you ran forums like Geek Hack as Facebook gained steam it was easy to see it happening.

Facebook is the Walmart of internet connectivity, it came in and stomped out everything else.

I still have an active account, but I rarely use it. When I made my account it was popular amongst people my age, but after high school I have been using it less and less.

Most of my friends and I don't actively use Facebook itself anymore. The main reason our accounts are still around is because it's required to use Messenger. Facebook itself (not including IG, Oculus, Whatsapp etc.) is dead. If Messenger didn't exist, I wouldn't be surprised if there were 50% or less active accounts.

I have always had a disdain for Facebook. I have only visited some stores' Facebook pages in Private Browsing mode, because there was no alternative.

... the only time it ever even came up was when a job interview said they required a FB profile, which was enough for me to not be interested any longer.
I once angrily withdrew a job application to a company because the service that was their product started requiring a FB account right after I had applied. They halted their association with FB after a while though.
