Really tight keycap fit on MX clear stems?
« on: Wed, 21 November 2012, 23:01:38 »
So I've put ergo clears on my KBT Race and one thing that really bothers me is the extremely tight fit of the keycaps on the stems. When I pull keycaps off of the board they usually pull the switch apart (the top housing comes off the bottom and the stem stays firmly in the keycap). I know it is the stems causing the problem because all the keycaps I try on it fit fine on my other boards. Is there any trick or solution to fixing this issue?

When I did ergo clears, the brand new stems were really tight too, so the point that I felt I'd rip off the whole switch if I pulled on the cap any harder.

The stem seems to form fit after having caps on them after awhile. Same with the caps. You could try a tiny dab of lithium grease on them if you need to remove it that often.

Is there some way to sand down the keycap hole?

Look for needle file or jewellers file, should find one that fits - if memory serves the cruciform void is 1.3mm wide.

Another option is to wrap sand paper around a needle or other suitably thin object, and use that.
