Separating Ergo Keyboard?
« on: Thu, 19 March 2015, 20:05:38 »
Quick question (I did some searching, and didn't see an answer...but that doesn't mean it isn't there):

I'm kitting out a cockpit for star citizen. Nothing so elaborate as a simpit, but I probably will have a car style seat and a general cockpit feel. If I wanted to have a split keyboard with easy access without moving my arms a lot, can something like the Goldtouch split keyboard be cut apart at the hinge, adding a longer wire to connect the two halves?

I'm specifically thinking of keyboards like this one:

Thanks,
Dvisic

I'm sure it can if your comfortable with soldering.

As an alternative, have you looked at the ErgoDox?

I did, yeah, and it looks very cool. It just looks a bit higher on the cost/effort scale. Of course, that assumes I can find a cheap used ergo keyboard somewhere....

Ergodox can now be preordered pre-assembled from

http://www.ergodox-ez.com/

Though you may not get it until December-ish

Great time to snag one at this price

Perhaps a pair of remapped Filco numpads laid out horizontally?
Buying more keycaps,
it really hacks my wallet,
but I must have them.

And why should I believe you?   ;D

Seriously, though, $220 after shipping is a little more than I can justify spending on a keyboard right now.  Especially as I've never really used a mechanical keyboard, so I don't really know that I'll like it any better.

Although there do seem to be rather strong feelings by those who use them....

Hmm.  I'll look into that.

As an aside, what is that cool keypad configuration in your avatar??

Lots of work, lots of reward :) I'd love to make it into a product, but I haven't enough time for all my keyboard projects!

Have you considered the Kinesis Freestyle? Two halves, can be separated up to 20", and around $100. Not mechanical though.

Welcome to Geekhack, Dvisic! Your username sounds Slavic. Where are you from?

Davkol in the Czech Republic has a larger Goldtouch with a broken hinge for sale for €15. It is otherwise new and has keys with regular key travel.
If it is anything like the Goldtouch that I had, you would need a relatively thick cable (with many wires) for it though. Shouldn't be a problem to take apart, only more soldering work.

Nothing so exciting, I'm afraid. I live just outside Portland, OR, USA.  A number of years ago, I was attempting to come up with a username for a forum.  Everything I thought of was taken. Frustrated, I glanced down at my desk. A circular for a local music shop was lying there, with a CD for sale with "Advisory: Explicit Lyrics" on the cover. I took the "dvis" from "advisory" and the "ic" from "lyrics" and, well, the rest is history. I've been using it ever since. :P

Um.. There are no "mechanical" 2mm actuating split keyboards on the market @ less than $200..

I think if you're just building a play seat.. that goldtouch you posted is the way to go, since you're not going to be working from it.. just some gaming..

The Kinesis Freestyle is split with a wire in between. They have two different options for separation 9" and 20".
