Stabilizers on the Corsair K70?
« on: Sat, 11 May 2013, 18:27:53 »
Hey guys, I've been eyeing the K70 for a while now because it's such a nice looking kb, but I was wondering what kind of stabilizers it had. Also, I've read that although the keyboard is light, quality wasn't affected. Is there anybody with this kb that can give a review or tell me whether it's a good purchase or not? Thanks.

It's Costar stabilizers.

As for whether or not it's a good purchase, it's not a bad keyboard from what I've seen, I just wouldn't drop $130 on it.

But I still have a bit of money on my newegg gift card, so I won't be paying full price.

It's Costar stabilizers.

I remember K60 and K90 were using Cherry stabilizers, did they switch over to Costar for K70?

I could be wrong, but I seem to remember it being stated that they use Costar stabilizers.

Darn, I want to make sure that it uses Costar stabs. I really dislike the Cherry ones.

Mmmmmm next time I swing by a computer shop I'll pop one open from the display demo and let you guys know  :P

I did that on the K60 and K90 that's how I know it had Cherry stabilizers.  But I have a feeling it might be the same on the K70  >____>

well it seems like they have cherry stabs.

I just finished replacing all the larger keys (enter, shift, space), and I found out that Corsair is AWESOME, they did away with the stabilizer bars. So, in order to pop these keys off, you just center the key remover and pull. No need to fuss around with the steel bar that's under other cherry red keyboards. +1 for Corsair for easy key cap replacement.

LOL it come with 3 LED for spacebar?  So serious lol but I guess it's to give an even under light I think.

But yeah I also wish it came with Costar stabilizers, hard to find a good backlit keyboard with Costar stabilizers.  Max Keyboard is the closest I can think of.

Otherwise I think Ducky is probably the best Cherry stabilized backlit keyboard.

I completely agree with you. But I actually came from a Ducky myself, but switched to Max for the stabs. But the thing I found out was that I didn't really like how the Nighthawk attracted so much dust and mine had a bit of pinging which was quite noticeable. When I found out about the Cherry stabs clip mod, and saw how nice the k70 looked (no bad reviews/experiences yet either), I decided that I'd go for it.

I read up about that mod before too, but to my understanding that it's only easy to do on a PCB mount Cherry stabilizer.  To do the same mod on plate mounted Cherry stabilizer you'd have to desolder all the switches and remove the backplate to do it.

So in the end I figure that sounds like too much trouble.  But then again I've never owned any Cherry stabilized keyboards so let me know if I'm wrong.

No, you only need to desolder the stabilized switch to make room for the metal bar to come out. through the hole. Cherry stabilisers are snapped to the plate just like Costar stabilisers.

There is a video where somebody installs a cherry stabilizer without desoldering. Could the stabilizer also be removed without desoldering?

I doubt it. There is so very little room in there.

The space bar on that keyboard (I suppose that it is a Phantom) is a bit of a special case, because you have access to it from the side.

I couldn't stand the Cherry stabilizers on my Leopold so I completely removed the Cherry Stabs (including the stablizer bars) with nothing but a pair of wire cutters, a pair of needle-nosed pliers and absolutely no desoldering. Remove the plate&pcb assembly, cut off as much of the short 90-degree angle on the stabs that you can (both ends) and fish for the remainders with the n-n pliers. Shake and repeat. Greatly improved the feel of my Leopold (but I'm still ditching it for a Filco MJ2 TK+ w/ blues.). I never replaced the stabilizers at all (although I tried and failed to put costar stabs on it). Honestly, I never even notice their absence.

It may have cherry stabilizer but IMO it is almost as responsive as costar ones.

responsive? how.. wha?

the only difference is a bit of extra mushiness when you press the key down all the way,  costar stabs are less prone to mushiness, as it is less sensitive to misalignment.

Cherry stabs are very sensitive to misalignment.
