Gave in, got Topre
« on: Tue, 25 June 2013, 23:54:34 »
Well, I gave in and bought a topre keyboard. And I have to say, it is quite different than any cherry board or rubber dome that I've tried. Not sure if it's better or worse yet, but it certainly is different. I think the cherry switch that it most reminds me of is the clears because of the large bump that occurs high up. But, honestly, it does seem to combine aspects of more "mechanical" boards with a certain feeling that SOME domes have that, frankly, isn't bad for me.

I got the uniformly weighted 55g model but it feels heavier than MX blues, which I thought were supposed to be 50 or 55g. Are they measuring different things or is it just something about how the force curves are different. Anyway, I guess time will tell how I like it in the long run. But am I glad I tried it? Absolutely. Am I intrigued enough to want to try their 45g model as well. I think so. Am I $250 glad and intrigued? Time will tell.

Excellent choice.  If you like the 55g because of the tactility, don't bother with the 45g or variable.  The 55g is very tactile, and the 45g...isn't.  An example would be if you like MX Blue a whole lot, you probably hate MX Red, it's a totally different experience.  Usually people like one or the other.  I was very disappointed by my 45g, but then again I hate MX reds which also have zero tactility.  Although if somehow you do like reds, then maybe you might want to try the lower weight Topre switches.  If you want to try something different, I would recommend getting a Matias Quiet Pro.  If feels somewhere between a MX Blue and 55g Topre.  Also, what you are noticing is that all of the force on Topre switches is exerted at the top, and once you pass a certain point your fingers just free fall.  Cherry switches actuate closer to the middle of the keystroke.

I'm a fan of blue and white, and to a slightly lesser extent clear (trying green soon). I got rid of my brown board because it just felt blah. Then again, it was a crappy rosewill board.
But really, I just want to find a few boards that I like and can switch between every now and then. I guess, ideally, I'd have my journey for a wonderful keyboard come to an end, or at least slow down...

Thanks for the tip on the 45g. I am much more hesitant now. But if I get the chance to try them, especially for cheap, I may still do so. Even if I buy something, I imagine that stuff sells well around here.

I like MX blue AND red :p

And I also like my recently acquired Topre, although perhaps getting used to the HHKB layout is taking some time.  Typing on it is a dream :)

I was very disappointed by my 45g, but then again I hate MX reds which also have zero tactility.

I don't think comparing 45g topre to MX reds is accurate.. 45g Topre is far from linear in terms of tactility

This is true.  Maybe I wasn't clear, I wasn't intending to compare reds to 45g Topre directly.  What I was trying to say was that the difference between 45g and 55g Topres is like the difference between red and blue MX switches.  Cherry and Topre switches feel nothing alike.  From my observations people tend to like either stiff or light switches, but not generally both.  There are also some people who probably enjoy typing on any mechanical keyboard though, so there are exceptions.

I must be an exception, since I rather like both 30g and 55g topres (though I just got the 30g board, so we will see if I still like it in a couple of weeks) :p

(I also like blacks and dislike both blues and reds, though, so maybe my preferences are just random)

Also, for people like me with heavy fingers, in boards like Topre 45g and Cherry MX Brown, the tactility isn't noticeable at all if you are typing quickly, which is why I stated zero tactility.  If you type slowly you can feel it, but I bang away hard and fast on my keyboard.

It has been a while since I used my filco with browns. I feel I'm topredicted.  I have a variable silent 87u and fc600c. Tbh I like the variable better, it is sublime to use with those lovely keys  :p. The fc660c is not bad and I really do fancy a set of RF keycaps on these!

Browns for me feel lighter than the 45g uniform on the 600c but heavier than on my RF 87u, maybe due to the silence mod. I would like to get my hands on 55g at some point but I have a feeling the 45g on the 600c is the upper threshold I can tolerate.

I am not a super fast typist, but type at a decent speed (around 75 wpm) , and also type pretty heavy (bottom out on almost every stroke), and while the tactility does not seem noticeable without any direct comparison, using a linear switch like the reds side-by-side with the browns really make me notice how much tactility is actually there.

I am also really interested in trying Topre. The problem is that it is pretty expensive to satisfy my curiosity and there is no guarantee I will like it better than what I have. Maybe if I spot a deal some day ( that would enable me to resell at no significant loss if I end up not being a fan).

Glad you got one and 'maybe' like it! I think everyone should at least try out a topre if given the opportunity. I think at some point in the future when things clear up I'll definitely give it another shot, right now I'm too afraid I'd get hooked and want to totally convert ;)

You really shouldn't reply to him. If everyone just started ignoring him and everything he says we'd all be better off. Also, not understanding the difference between a switch and a layout is pretty silly. If he were around someone could tell him that. But he's not. I have no idea where he is and if he's ever coming back.

I'd like to try a topre before buying one.  I find it hard to believe they are much better than a good rubber dome.

I was thinking about renting mine out for people to try. If enough people are interested, I might be up for sending it around and a tour. You'd pay shipping + deposit + small fee and then you get the deposit back when the next person gets it.

It was not the weakness of GH's features,

The weakness is purely your own..

But I don't blame you, since I am pretty much right 50000% of the time, so it'd be stupid of you to ignore such fantastic wisdom.

I tried a Topre three years ago. I had the black uniform 55g. For the life of me I could not detect any bump or tactility whatsoever, even pressing a key as slowly as possible. I have no idea what people are talking about when they say it's tactile. It's not. I think people are imagining things.  I tried it for a couple of months and decided to sell it here in the classifieds.

I'm glad the OP likes it so far. It's a very well built board, has a nice textured finish and should last a lifetime. I just didn't like the complete lack of tactility.

Hmm i'm really suprised to hear that,

The tactility is definitely different to Cherry MX tactiles. Since the bump is at the very top of the keystroke it's a different type of tactile feeling. It's obvious on cherry switches because you can press like 1mm down before hitting that bump, then you have to push through it.

I personally find my 45g Topre 660C lovely and tactile, preferential to factory MX browns, blues or clears. The entire motion is smooth and satisfying :)

Well, to me, the 55g feel a lot like clears. I'm thinking of getting the 45g leopold at some point. But I'd guess that might be a little better if you like lighter switches.

What is an Ergodox? I never heard of that keyboard. They don't even sell it on EliteKeyboards, must be one of those crappy keyboards. Actually MechanicalKeyboards.com doesn't even carry the Ergodox, that must mean it's not even a mechanical keyboard.

Topre is for Elite Keyboardists. Go home ErgoDox.

you forgot keyboardco.com ....errrrr...

Oh right, that means the ErgoDox must be a shoe. It must be fun using it to step on mud and poop.

I'm glad to hear you like your board. I received my 45g a couple weeks ago and it has been a pleasure to type on. However, similar to you, I would really like to try a 55g and satisfy my curiosity of knowing whether I prefer the 45g or the 55g. If only they came with variable (as in changeable) weights!

Topre is like a really smooth and refined rubber dome which doesn't fatigue.

Please don't be childish.

The ergo dox, phantom gh60 are brilliant pieces of engineering that are here out of sheer enthusiasm for keyboards. Many many hours of hard work and community support made these projects a reality.

Just as we have topre zealous individuals we have ergo dox zealous people.

It comes down to preference. Don't mock it, though your opinion is most welcome. What drives new purchases, especially for enthusiasts like myself is usually the consensus and opinions of fellow GH'rs

Personally I love topre, I have tried most of the cherry switches and I think 45g is the limit for me. I'm not a fan of the hhkb because I don't have the time to invest in a new layout.

I have a real itch for an ergo dox, fascinating piece of kit. I hope there will be a round 4 when I will have some cash to sink into this beast.

i have been thinking about getting a topre board as well. (realforce 87u to be exact) i like browns and blues and i recently got a clear board but it feels a bit too heavy.

is 45g or 55g better for someone who likes browns and blues. (weight-wise)

I used to like brown and blue, and as such thought the 55g may be too heavy.  I was just wrong.  I love my 55g board.  That being said, as soon as EK stocks the silent 87 I'm picking that up to bring to work.
