Your Hands Position when you Type? Help Me Please?
« on: Sat, 07 December 2013, 16:00:46 »
Q1. So I was just wondering what postition your hands are when you actually type?

Personally since I was a gamer before I could type well, I would always put my index, middle and ring finger on ASD and my pinky on shift. But this is the incorrect way to touch type yes?

The correct way is to have your Index on F, middle on D, ring on S, and pinky on A for the right hand? The left has the index on J and middle in K and the ring on L yes? Neither of my hands are in the correct posion. My index left finger rests on J, but no other fingers on my left hand are even on the keyboard and I honestly rarely use my ring fingers.

Q2. So my problem with this propper way of typing is how does one reach the enter key with their pinky quickly, and also shift seems quite a while down for me since me hands are quite small. I'm using the Filoc Majestouch 2 with MX Blacks.

Q3. Also, I have a ludacris amount of trouble typing certain keys. The "T, Y, U" keys is one prime example (I always get them mixed up), as well as the "D,F,G" keys. I'm not sure why? (I can type T fine almost always, but for some reason, when I go to type the Y, I sometimes hit T?)
Could someone enlighten me and tell me if these troubles that I'm having at the moment are due to the way that I type which even I know is pretty bad. Would using the propper way of typing increase my speeds and accuracy?
I guess I'm asking what is the best way to type.
P.s. I'm very sorry if this seems very awkward to read but I was just jotting down some of my thoughts without really planning on what I was going to say.

I was looking at that, but that doesn't really answer my question :/
Will using this method improve my typing speeds? I mean I know it's the correct way to type and all, but I've tried it and it just feels awkard. I haven't tried fit for a long period of time, but I still feel very uneasy while using it. I mean if it will increase my typing speeds and all I will defs do it and give it a go for a longer period of time. This methods top typist types 178 WPM, which is easily beaten by a number of people on 10FF.
More answer please?

10 fast is not representative of real top speeds..

ultimately it will not come down to fingering.

Fingering is not what slows you down..

In terms of "transcription" speed,  finger roles and memorized n-graphs will increase speed significantly..

People seldom reach even 130 sustained transcription..

Sean Wrona can only do around 165 sustained.. and he's by far the fastest.

The only thing you need to be weary of is using your pinky, some people under-utilize because they may not have naturally developed keyboard coordination for that finger.

Could you elaborate on n-graphs and also more about the pinky and how to ensure that it is utilized effectively?

My question is... For you is typing really a concern? Do you type enough on a daily basis where speed actually means something to you or are you just looking for something to brag about?

Not going to lie, brag about.
Althought like all people I do need to often type a lot and quickly. I'm a student, and things like essays and research reports do come up. Typing and transcribing from a source is an important skill to have. I don't want to look down at my board every time I need to look at a source, then took up to MS Word just to see if I've done it correctly. I would like to just look at the source, then not have a problem when I look at Word after a paragraph.
To me personally, I think this would be an excellent way to improve myself. I'm always looking for ways to improve my skills and to learn more, and I don't see much downside to being able to do so.
So all in all, it's kinda bragging, but to myself, but it's also a concern (I hope you understand, since I said it was bragging, then said it was both)

Maybe I don't understand your question, but it just seems like you want/need to learn how to touch type. Touch typing is a method where you keep four fingers on the home row, and move those fingers up and down so that the move the least possible. The website I posted, or any other "touch typing" website, will show you how to do that better than any of us can explain in a post. It will also teach you the keyboard better, and will probably correct the problem of frequently missing certain keys that you mentioned in your original post.

Honestly, if speed is one of your top priorities, learn home row and learn to speed up from there. That will increase your speed. If you wish to increase further with the added bonus of less muscle strain, consider picking up DVORAK or COLEMAK which are alternative keyboard layouts which are laid out much more logically in order to reduce strain while reaching for keys.

Adding to some of the responses you've got, which seem sensible to me:  yes to where the fingers should be.  If you're touch typing, you're using eight fingers all the time (and the thumb for the space bar), and you can type faster and more accurately using more fingers once you develop your skills -- which is mostly a matter of practice and more practice.  With most new skills, the proper technique feels awkward and difficult at first, and it takes practice and persistence to become comfortable.  So there's a price to pay at the front end in terms of time and effort, but a big payoff down the road.

I guess I'm asking what is the best way to type.
P.s. I'm very sorry if this seems very awkward to read but I was just jotting down some of my thoughts without really planning on what I was going to say.

As you didn't mention anything else, I assume that you type standard QWERTY layout. In this case, the most frequently used keys are actually on the top row, not the homerow. Therefore it's apparently better to keep your fingers, as many typists mentioned in other threads, on QWEF and JIOP. The whole method of teaching to type letters in repetition is extremely foolish, and only useful for QWERTY because there are almost no words you can type only on the home row. Both Dvorak and Colemak teach to type short words from each row, which increases knowledge of the row and allows for actually useful practice (why would you ever be typing a single letter three times in a row?).

If you do have some time, it might be worth it for you to look into alternate layouts. Dvorak is really nice because almost any game will automatically switch the hotkey locations, so even though it might be <AOE instead of WASD, the location is the same and the same function will come out, and it's more conducive to typing. Sean Wrona's typing, which he has stated himself, using QWERTY, is much better because he doesn't confine himself to the useless homerow, he lets his hands move everywhere. However, I doubt that anyone on this forum can even surpass 170 more than once in a blue moon, so it's pretty much accepted that he's the only one who can do that.

Just learn home row I guess, and the correct fingering or something close to it. This is for you http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/typing/flash/stage1.shtml

Home row on QWERTY loses speed and increases finger movement. Don't waste your time.
