Why are all of these newer, and lighter SSKs going for so much? I much prefer the (as far as I know) original SSKs from 1987 that have the heavier steel plates. You'd think there would at least be different price tiers based on vintage and quality. It looks like people are just bidding without regard to anything but the SSK moniker.
SSKs for everyone!

There you go. The second one looks more like what I'm talk'n 'bout. The second board definitely trumps the first.
SSKs for everyone!

I don't doubt that and those prices are crazy high, but why wouldn't the "originals" go for more or do they? I haven't really kept up with the pricing of SSKs. I do know the prices have just about tripled in the last 6-8 months.
SSKs for everyone!

I hear ya, man.  I think a lot of people do not understand the differences in plate heftiness with Model M's over the years.  Basically anything past the late 80's is not going to have the same plate thickness and feel as the earlier models.  I currently have a 1390120, M13, and Unicomp steel plate in my possession.  The difference between all of them is easily visible.  Things have just thinned out over the years.

The form factor is more important to people than other details that really affect the feel of a Model M.

I don't think the plate thickness really affects the feel that much. If you're really concerned about the feel to that extent buy an F.

Personally I think M2s feel nicer than Ms. Fs are of course better though.

Really? I just picked up an M2 the other day and it feels... not as expected. I'm still not sure how I feel about it yet. I need to repair it before I can really judge it. Also, the typing area is completely flat. There aren't even molded keycaps. I'm curious to see how it feels during some long typing sessions.

The rate these sell - if Unicomp did make a new SSK it would probably sell quite well, provided it didn't have some weird bottom row layout.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Don't worry, it will have a weird bottom row layout.  And large font!
