Another Monitor Problem - weird discolorations
« on: Fri, 17 January 2014, 21:58:28 »
Hello Everyone!

Once again I come forward with a monitor problem. These things don't ever seem to stop!

My Dell monitor has suddenly become discolored, sometimes with flashing red lines, sometimes with unstable and discolored image, and sometimes it fails to power on entirely. The power button may be lighted but the screen is all black.

Would love to have anyone give advice, as I can't use it at all and it is off warranty.

Also attached pictures of what the same background (New Zealand) looks like on my good monitor. The monitors used to be exactly the same color. That way you can see that my camera isn't the one creating distorted colors.

Looks like a damaged/loose cable at first, but the 4th picture with digital artifacts and mention of lines indicate that your GPU is starting to go.

hook another monitor up and see what happens

if it does the same thing time to invest in a new video card, if not and works fine you know what else you have to buy......

Could also be something as simple as a jacked hue setting. I can come pretty close to the bad image by manipulating image hue in my nvidia control panel with the good image. Check that, if monitor does same thing on other GPU make sure it's not bad setting in monitor osd... check with other display on same gpu port to rule that out.

just wanted to say, thanks everybody! These are very workable solutions for a clumsy oaf like Gutz. I can (probably) not destroy my entire system while sucking the dust out of my computer, and I can swap cables and output slots (whatever you call that) to try different monitors on the graphics card. Hopefully my next post will be a positive one and nothing to do with "my system is dead, help!"

dust can get "under the heatsink too" where the ram and resistors and stuff are.. and enough dust+ a little moisture, can cause minor shorts// capacitance..

So that's why it's advisable to always re-seat the sink once a year or once every 6 month if you got high use.

Thanks for the great explanation, tp4! I opened my computer, and discovered a bunny warren complete with granddad bunny and lots of babies. I think I saw bunnylake in there as well, lurking in a corner. It's been several years since I opened this computer.

Fortunately, after a vacuuming (and no reseating of heat sink, because I really dare not mess with these things knowing I'm such a klutz), the problem vanished! THANK YOU ALL!

Perhaps you could watch a few youtube videos on the subject and work up the courage...

You will need a small tube of thermal grease after you've cleaned the heatsink..

that's pretty much the only "item" that you'll need to purchase.

Looks like I have something new added to my list of must-do things.

Thermal grease, heh, for someone like me with no knowledge of these things, it's something new. And grease doesn't sound good. It sounds like something that gathers bunnies like nobody's business...
