Any ideas on where to sell used computers?
« on: Sun, 15 January 2017, 09:50:10 »
Hey everyone!

I've got a number of computers (two ThinkPads, an MSI gaming laptop, and a very high end custom desktop) that I want to sell. I've sold on Craig's List before, but it's kind of a pain. Are there any sites similar to this one (or do you folks think GH would be a good venue to sell these?) that I could use to sell these off? Everything's great, I just desperately need to consolidate, and have way too many machines around this house.

Would love any ideas or opinions you might have.

Thank you!

You can try at r/hardwareswap but tbh you'd often get less paid if there are ppl with computer knowledge buying. You can also try at GH there has been such things sold here as well.
Very busy with studies atm.

/r/hardwareswap is an idea I hadn't thought of. I have a reasonable expectation of how much this stuff is worth, so I think my expectations are probably in line with what it'd fetch. I didn't know there were previous sales of computers here, but I will probably post once I get some photos.

If you can't sell them on here, PC enthusiast forums, reddit, etc... there are TONS of ways to donate (and get tax deductions). About 10 years ago, I couldn't really get enough for my back-up gaming PC or my wife's laptop to make it feel worth it, so I passed them on to an after-school music production program in North Philly.
My wife I a also push her button . But now she have her button push by a different men. So I buy a keyboard a mechanicale, she a reliable like a Fiat.

Not a bad idea for the three laptops. I'd be pretty disinclined to do this with the desktop though, as I'd not be able to realize the deduction until 16 months from now. The timing is about as bad as possible to do a deduction with the year just having rolled over. If it doesn't sell at close to what I'd like to see, it's definitely another decent option that could possibly be a greater value. This machine is a massive overkill for any school usage though: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/QNCXhq

Wow. Yeah... that is pretty beastly. No student usage there. I'm not up-to-date on the PC enthusiast front these days, but I assume that can run some ****. And I didn't think about how long out that deduction would be. Good point.

I think gaming laptops (and maybe PCs) are welcomed by some armed forces charities.

I'm with ya, though. Get some cash quickly out of that big rig, and perhaps donate the laptops.

Good luck!

///Bearer of bad news..   Not trying to be a ****...   But this is a tech forum, where most people are knowledgeable about this stuff..

The Am3 board and 9590 cpu are not in demand..

It's very unlikely anyone will pick up on this box in totality, because the price to performance ratio is very low due to the Amd platform.  If they do, expect a steep discount...

If you do want to sell this,

--- At the very highest, you'll need someone who is relatively unaware of the current cpu landscape, And bad at math.. so,,, local craigslist is best for that type of audience..

--- In the middle, you can sell Everything OUTSIDE of the cpu / motherboard at 30-40% markdown.

--- At the Low end, you'd sell it in pieces at 40%-50% markdown...

The stuff you got outside of the cpu/motherboard is good mid-tier stuff. and would sell on their own,  butttttt, IMHO there's no real point since they'll fit your next build just fine..

Exact same thing I did.  Found a local group in need, and donated.  They were very happy to receive them, but fair warning- they have many donations of standard computers.  I donated some high end stuff and some unique stuff that they could use to give the kids a chance to get their hands on computer history.  Standard Dell, HP, etc computers, they reject.

That is exactly the kind of computer that they *will* accept though.  And you'll get the deduction based on the estimate you put on it.  In the aftermarket, that kind of thing loses value quickly.  The laptops - they might not even take them.  The organization that I take my stuff too doesn't unless they're really good and in good shape.  They have some amazing stuff just sitting on their shelves in their lock room because they have too much to do anything with.

Hey tp, appreciate the thoughts, but I'm not trying to fund another build. I'm really only trying to consolidate. I'm well aware the parts aren't "in demand," (it's about a 16-month old build) and I'm not attempting to get 90% of my money back. I want to get rid of it, get some of the cash back, and have fewer computers in my house. Right now, between me, my wife, and our three kids, there are nearly a dozen computers. I'm quite familiar with how much it's worth, just looking for ideas on where to try to sell it. While I don't expect to reclaim most of the $1700ish purchase price, I'd rather get a single chunk for it. Totally not interested in parting it out, as like I said, I'm not building something else, and I have no need to keep any of the parts.

Tp4 haz no less than 30x computers between Tp4 and 20 feet of tp4..

So,  I feel your pain of having too many computers...

I really think you got good bones there and may as well hold onto it for the next build..

If you can ebay off the motherboard and Cpu for ~$200 together,

Then sell the memory separately for $70 per 16GB,

Then buy into a 7700k, z270 and DDR4 @ $600..   Minus the $340..

For only $260,  you get a major upgrade..

Of course we'd wait for Zen to come out, and see whussup with that..   But i doubt Zen will upset the intel Dominance for another 2-3 years.

A decent eBay reputation goes a long way. Shipping is a bit of a hassle but IMHO it beats having to meet up at an agreed upon location. People don't seem to realize that computers need to be plugged in to be tested. And there's the lowballers and people with a million questions. I've eBayed a few computers over the years. I've never had to meet up with someone, and I've never had to ask or answer, "could you plug it in for me?" Maybe I'm just jaded about selling PCs through craigslist in my area IDK. Craigslist across the pond is on another level. Germany.. the furniture/speakers in the freebie section. . good god.

I tried eBay a few years ago, and got ripped on the shipping and dishonest buyers.

I published a long dissertation on ebay a while back.

https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=51443.msg1132476#msg1132476

Unfortunately, ebay is strongly prejudiced in favor and buyers and against sellers - seems counter-intuitive because they make their money from charging sellers and not buyers - but the underlying principle is that if demand exists, supply will come out of the woodwork to satisfy it.
"It's 110, but it doesn't feel it to me, right. If anybody goes down. Everybody was so worried yesterday about you and they never mentioned me. I'm up here sweating like a dog. They don’t think about me. This is hard work.
Do you feel the breeze? I don't want anybody going on me. We need every voter. I don't care about you. I just want your vote. I don't care."

It's been a few years for me, I don't know if the patterns remain, but there were some telltale feedback patterns that I would keep my eyes out for. And as a routine seller, I had to offer free shipping and handling. There was no other way to gain the trust of others at first.
