Tp, Wha bout CURVED TVs/Monitors..
« on: Fri, 17 May 2019, 14:53:39 »

Very generally, For LCD,  SINGLE viewer setups, Curved will out perform flat.

In the case of IPS and OLED, Curved is better, but not a huge difference. This is because they have a wider color stability angle.

VA-panel is improved Tremendously by Curving.  Because VA only has good color stability ~15 degrees.

VA is problematic in this area, HOWEVER, because of its significant contrast superiority over IPS,  it still provides a much better looking picture despite angle drift.

Take a look at these graphs for a typical Samsung VA.

Notice that color accuracy Delta E is only good up until 21 degrees

Brightness is good for ~20-30 degrees

Black is good for only 10 degrees

219590-0

219592-1

219594-2

NOW...  CURVED panel to the rescue.

On a typical 55 inch curved panel.  At 2 meters,  without Curve, the edge off-axis angle is ~17 Degrees. VERY Drifted, with Delta E in the 3+ Range, along with brightness and black lvl drift. Essentially, black will look slighted greyed compared to head on.

However WITH CURVE (samsung 4.2 meter radius), viewed at the same 2 meters, the edge Off axis angle is ~9 Degrees. Delta E of ~1, which means its slight inaccuracy is imperceptible.

To Calculate your off axis viewing on the Curved Panel you intend to buy.

You may use the following simple algebra+ Diagram.

219596-3

Example:

Size of TV,  55 inch
Curvature,  4.2 meter radius, 165.354 inch
Viewing distance, 2 meters, 78.7402
Aspect ratio of tv, 16:9

1_ Calculate the bottom edge of the TV,

The TV Size  55 * 16 / 18.358 = 47.937 inch

2_ Now we want the circumference of the circle,

2*Pi*165.354 inches = 1038.95 inch

3_ Now we want the Edge ON-Axis viewing angle @ 4.2 meters,

47.937/1038.95 = 0.0461

0.0461* 360 degrees / 2 = 8.305 degrees.

4_ Finally to find the Off axis angle at 2 meter seating, we use the law of cosine twice.

c^2 = a^2 + b^2 + 2abCos(C) , where C is the 8.305 for the first round

We know the radius 165.534 inch, we know the distance to midpoint (86.794 inch) from 165.534 Minus seating distance 2m (78.740). We know the On axis angle 8.305 degrees.

Plug it all in.. we get 80.625 inch for the 3rd side.

Now that we have all 3 sides, we use the law of cosine Again, to find the final off axis angle. here we use

arcCos( (a^2+c^2-b^2)/(2ac))

If you kept enough decimals on your inputs, you should get something around 9 degrees. I got 8.927

You can also use law of sine, sine (8.0305)/ 3rd side( 2.047) = sine (x) / 2.2

Now looking at the chart, we see 9 degrees barely has Any Color drift.. at 2 meters for a 55 inch 4200 curved panel,  the accuracy is very well maintained throughout the panel.

DISCLAIMER, Tp4 has no idea if this is done correctly.. Haven't had to Trig in a while.

Also, in reality, i don't think the curve bends the pixels perfectly inwards, so DE is probably still higher than 1, but should be < 5.  Which is still acceptable.

One issue I forgot to mention. The glossy reflections on the screen are stretched horizontally by the curve. So on a dark screen the TV makes you appear epic phat.

Curved monitors feel good on the eyes. I personally feel that it makes the thing a bit more wider.

Curved television or movie screen is crap below 200".

Curved computer monitor is desirable if ultrawide 21:9 34" or wider. You can go as wide as possible as long as you first have got enough height.

/Headscratch

So Scientific. !! Hahahahahaha

Tp4 would've prefered an earlier model with m0ar xtreme curve 3m radius, but they don't make no more.
