Installing Diablo
« on: Wed, 19 June 2019, 18:23:45 »
So it has probably been like 20 years since I played this....

On a scale of 1 to 10 how well do you think my fond memories will match current game play?

I tried a while back, couldn't get it to wurk.

But overall, if you watch people play it, the game is a bit claustrophobic vs D2 or D3.

D2 is much more playable overall.

I do think there are screen-mods for D1 to make it bigger though. Not sure.

Yeah so I think the game would be better on a CRT and not my massive 2k monitor. The sounds make me cream pie, but I don't think I will play this much longer. It does not appear to be as fun as I remember it.

Sad feelings.

Is it the new HD mod? If so, I installed that a few months ago and no-lifed it for a couple of days. I had fun but it got old quick.

I think so, I got it from GoG. I may give Space Quest a crack next and see if I can completely ruin all my childhood gaming experiences.

I think there is an option to run the original version.

I tried playing DII again around the time DIII came out and coulnd't do it. Just too ugly and clunky now, like going back and trying to play Baulder's Gate or something. The dungeon crawler has been vastly streamlined and improved upon and those '90s ones just frustrate me now.

Yeah I already tried redoing Bauldar's gate, lasted about a week.

My other monitor is an original from when I first bought this computer in 2011 I think it was. I only have the Mobo left now from that PC.

I bought the monitor from Gumtree for like 500 about 2 years ago, it was an opportunistic thing. The guy that I bought it from actually bought about 6 of them from a day trader that had just retired or something. I guess the day trader bought them as a tax claim  just before he/she retired and then resold them for a profit maybe.

It is not like I went out and bough a brand new one.

Fair warning,Diablo 1 & 2 have multiplayer, but the client hasn't been patched or updated,so they may have a few security holes since they were designed for a far more trusting internet.

Don't bother with D1, just go for D2. Still easily one of the best games ever made IMO, pretty sure I played that game well over 2000 hours.

If you wanna good 3/4 action adventure rpg experience I'd say play Grim Dawn or Torchlight II. Both are fantastic examples of modern-classic hack and slash design. Taking modern design elements while still retaining the feel of a classic Diablo-style game with good writing and world design, tons of loot, and rewarding skill tree systems. Both also still have a fairly active online scene as well.

Torchlight is a highly refined 3/4,   And honestly, if a serious writer was just paid to MOD it,   It would be Next Lvl.

The mechanics are all there, but without a lore, it's hard to invest in it emotionally.

Yeah GD has a much more fleshed-out world, but Torchlight is fun to mindlessly run around in. It's aesthetic focus is much wider so you feel more like you are traveling a large fantasy world, vs GD which is more compact and cohesive in it's visual and story presentation.

Does Torchlight even have a plot? I honestly don't remember, something about demons from portals? It's always demons from portals with these types of games isn't it...

Very much so! Although I've recently relapsed into Terraria which is arguably even more dangerous! xD

Diablo 1 has some amazing atmosphere that Diablo 2 just seems to lack.

However gameplay wise Diablo 2 is a huge step and improvement. They are really different games entirely.

Diablo 1 focused on suspense almost like a horror movie, slow movement, dark catacombs with creepy as **** music.

Diablo 2 focused more on action and a "open world" feeling with varied locations - The gameplay and skill tree was so amazing that WoW Classic used it.

Diablo 3 is.... well lets not talk about that game.

I agree, D2 is your best game to try. Try some interesting building like Dagger Necro or a Dragoon Barb. Whirlwind Sin? So many builds!!!!!!!

Dis' messed up.

So, My integrated Gfx (Intel HD3000) running a 2D load won't hit its max clock,

However, @ 750mhz instead of 1300mhz, Diablo 1 will only run @ 30fps instead of 60fps..

I can't even force clocks anywhere.. it haz the p0wr, but it's sealed away ...

Forced to play in 1280x720, ... OH  THE HUMANITY..

This is REAL torture, the true face of Diablo. !! !!!
