not being American i do not know what models you get but the ones we get here in France do not make for great bread, at least the ones i tried, the bread is very often very dry and tough, but then again i am french so maybe not the same taste in bread :)

Is it at least better than the store bought $1/1lb white bread ?

I bought a second-hand Panasonic SD-ZB2502 this year and I like it very much. I like the bread better than most store-bought (or bakery-bought) bread, and it's a lot cheaper (<1€ per 750g-loaf including all ingredients and the estimated energy costs). Also, you always have fresh bread without any questionable additives (unless you choose to add them yourself).

I can't vouch for any other machines, though. I think it always pays off to go with some premium Japanese stuff, but that's just me.

I don't know what bread you can buy for $1 per loaf but it is probably better than that. I don't like the bread that comes out of those machines very much, but it is not terrible.

And flour is very cheap, if you eat much bread and are looking to save money, that may be a good way to do it.
"However, even though I was born in the Mesozoic, I do know what anyone who wants to reach out to young people should say: Billionaires took your money. They took your chance to buy a home. They took your chance at a good education. They stole your opportunities. Billionaires took the things you want in life. If you really want those things, you have to take them back.
That's the message. That's the whole message. Say that every day, not just to reach America's frustrated young white men, but people of every age, race, and gender.
Late-stage capitalism is a wealth-concentration engine, focused on vacuuming up every dollar and putting it in as few hands as possible. Republicans are helping that vacuum suck.
How does a tiny fraction of the population get away with this? They do it by dividing the other 99% of Americans against themselves."

Breadmakers are amazing. I used to have a nice Cuisunart my mom gave me when she upgraded hers and I had it for over a decade. If you actually use its they are totally worth it. I made bread about once a week, also good for getting the dough going and you can lay them onto a baguette pan to make French shaped bread. Is it cheaper than buying bread in a store? Probably not. Is hot fresh bread you made yourself delicious? Yes.

also where is bread $1?

No knead recipe I use-

3 3/4 cups flour
1 tbsp. yeast
1/2 tbsp. salt
1 1/2 cups warm apple cider(you can sub this out with milk if you like),I aim for slightly above room temp

Mix flour, yeast, and salt in a bowl

Add cider to bowl and mix thoroughly

Cover bowl and let sit in a warm place until dough has at least doubled in size

Transfer dough to a well buttered bread pan and let rise again until the dough is a little over the rim of the pan

Cook @375F for 30 minutes

Remove loaf from pan and wrap in a damp bread cloth and let it cool.

Makes for a nice loaf of bread with minimal effort.

You can use warm water in the recipe but you will need to add a little sugar/honey/molasses as well.

Bread maker is only for those lazier than I am,and I am very lazy.  :thumb:

@   Lanrefni,

The reason Tp4 doesn't want to use the Oven is because of how much energy it uses up to cook very little.

Tp4 thought a bread maker with a much smaller cavity could be more efficient than the giant oven ?

I use a toaster oven, not a full size,I've never used a breadmaker so I couldn't tell you how much power they draw.

I've been making sourdough. It's surprisingly little work if you avoid kneading (but it takes some planning regarding time). A friend bakes hers in what looks like a largish toaster oven, so she doesn't use a full size oven.

I bake two loaves at a time in mine.

from what i know toaster oven are are really inefficient because of their lack of insulation... and half ovens exists, i have one at home with proper 4cm glasswool insulation and i do think it kinda is the best of both worlds unless you bake for a lot of peoples... like i sometimes do :) (far less lately though)

Being in a country that is known for it's baked goods and a benchmark to put things up against - I would think a mass-produced bread maker/machine wouldn't be able to be up to French standards, lol.  :))

Now that I mostly avoid carbohydrates, a hefty sandwich or a bagel always makes me sleepy.

This is pretty game changing, it's the middle of the night, Tp4 is eating fresh hot bread w/ a thick veggie Curry.

The only drawback is possibly the amount of salt that goes into making bread, it's alot more than anticipated. especially if Tp4's eating 6lbs of bread a day.

I only used desktop to denote size, It's pretty small, fits on my desk, but obviously it's in the kitchen where all the other food things are. kekeke

nice part of making your own bread, you dose your own salt, i eat very little salt, so last time i made bread i used 2g of salt for 750g of bread, you can also add stuff to it, like garam masala powder to make an indian curry tasting bread
