Tactile switch pre-travel
« on: Sat, 24 April 2021, 16:03:13 »
I was wondering, what makes the pre-travel in tactile switch, like Holy Panda?
Stem? or leaf?
I think its stem, its legs, right?

Holy Pandas have small, 1-2mm pre-travel, where Glorious holy pandas dont have that pretravel, however their leaf makes a horrible ping noise - lubing it, destroys tactility.

I thought I could swap and make a frankenswitch - Glorious stem and Holy Panda's housing.
Would that work?

Well the pre-travel is influced by the bump and the leaf, both size and location are affecting the pre-travel.

I though Holy Pandas are liked because of their zero pre-travel, also aren't they both meant to be similar?
Would putting a GP stem into a HP housing? probably yeah, but if you're getting Holy Panda switches might as well just use it and skip switching parts.

Also the top occasionally affects pre-travel by determining the resting position of the stem.

Reason for switching parts is that HP has small pre-travel, GP not. I wanted to know if I can could fix leaf ping and keep no pre-travel.

Right now my ordered Zealios v2 78g came in - testing now.
These are pretty interesting switches I have to say:) Don't have pre-travel, no leaf ping and pretty heavy:)
I like them. I haven't even lubed them yet and I may just leave them like they are now.
They do have small spring ping, but sitting straight (not having my ear right at the keyboard) I cannot hear that, so its good.
I don't want to ruin them lubing - adding inconsistency, as I don't know if my lubing will be good enough, keeping consistency.

without the pretravel, depending on you you guys rest your hands, it makes errant letters more frequent.

Correct   In my observation
The stem is the one that cause the pre travel

You can see where the bump begins and ends with the stem. You can see the difference in when it starts if you look at the top of the legs

Because when you're typing you're not always moving a single finger up and down, other fingers may go down slightly. The pretravel is a buffer space for intent.

Interesting Mr Tp I like this theory of yours. I don't know whether i can observe the errors  in my own typing. But I do know what you mean by the "other fingers going down slightly"

Yeah, but actuation point is always below, plus spring force won't let you press that Zealios v2 78g for example as its very stiff.
Even Holy Panda has resistance big enough to not to actuate if your other fingers stomps on them:)
