Halo
« on: Sat, 27 November 2021, 12:37:41 »
Finally got Halo to work.

Anyone else Playing ?

Right now it doesn't seem like a fair fight vs people with faster GPUs.

The graphics settings do not let you to turn down "ENUFF" stuff to get the same FPS as rich people.

So, on p00r Tp4's 1060,  only ~70-85fps, 1080p everything on LOW/Off,

What needs to happen is they have to change the GPU setting such that Most of the expensive features can be turned off completely.

CPU usage is 100%, wth is it doing with all that ??

Still having fun overall.  Pacing is good, the gravity is a bit wonky, but this is inherited from consoles.

Ok, figured out the CPU  issue,  it runs like the old Mastercam, just 100% cpu if you set game's fps uncapped.

Basically, set the cap to ~20% higher than the gpu's max output.

Start with 120fps limiter, then in game watch the meter, find the max, either go up or down, add 20%

If set to unlocked, the GPU does not get to max fps, because the engine is choking the CPU.

No longer have 100% cpu, it's running at 30-40%,  my fps is ~80-100 now (Before 70-85).  So for limiter I set it to 120fps limit

Don't think i'm addicted yet,   it's OKkkkkk..

1060 really is just not hitn' it.

Open maps 70-85
Closed maps 80-100

probably 3070 would cut cheese.. hrrrrmmmm..

I really don't like how the weapons are on the walls.

I did not realize the multiplayer was free to play, holy crap! They give the game away with the pass, and the multi is ftp. Where are they making money off Halo Infinite?

They do the cosmetic armor stuff,  I think the pricing is fair considering.

Right now people are complaining about the progression system, which is extremely slow if you want to build the spartan (cosmetic) parts.

I tested the game in training mode for a few hours, I think using 1080p + lowest rendering resolution so it's lower than 1080p, 100-130fps,  is the only way to be competitive on my low end Gpu.   Running the GPU at near 100% also feels like its introduced a bit more input lag.   So perhaps capping the fps to 85-95% of peak is more consistent, not totally sure about it yet. But using the Cap to lower the CPU usage is critical,  lots of input lag uncapped.

It's definitely satisfying Shooter.  As an F2P which will improve over time, it's hard to complain.

The progression system if a bit faster would be more enticing.

I'd like them to allow lowering enough settings to achieve at least ~300 fps.

Loving the new Halo, 343 did a great job.  They could tweak the hit box and hit detection a small bit, but other than that I love it.  Brings back fond memories of Halo 2 days/nights.

Had on dat halo 2 soundtrack.. Bang'n, 17 years later.

The hit detection might be an input lag issue, what's ur framerate capped at.

I've been playing a lot of Halo Infinite to my surprise! I was never the biggest Halo fan when I was a kid, but I'm having a great time playing so far.

The progression & monetization could use *some* work, but it's not a huge worry for me.

I find it kinda boring tbh. Got roped into it to play with some friends, but being used to UT99 and Quake 3, this feels unpolished, lacklustre, and it looks and sounds bad. Controls aren't great, weapons extremely boring, weak and unsatisfying, environments look like crap, player models couldn't be more generic if they tried, no interesting sounds or even voice lines, music barely noticeable. It feels very much like a game with no features or content at all.

it's only 10am , Tp4 has already played halo for 5 hours today.

/addiction !!

In game settings,  Everything Low/ Off, with exceptions of Geometry = Medium, otherwise the pop-in geo-model changes are a huge distraction.

Render resolution 71% of 1080p

Sharpening = 100%
__Halo's image Post-processing engine is TOP NOTCH.  Thanks console gaming.

fps cap set @ 135, 35-52% cpu usage.

Hopefully in the future, they will give us the options to tweak up to ~2-300fps.

16:10 is a good resolution for this game, because there's quite alot of verticality on the maps, where 16:9 is more limiting.

Sure you can increase FOV but then everything is narrower to shoot at.

Wish List,   Custom aspect ratio.

This way ,  On CRT for example,  We could run 1280x 767 @ 90hz, BUT stretch it out vertically to 4:3,  THEN  internally correct aspect ratio.

It actually all should be possible since the game has dynamic resolution, which means all the control surfaces are in place already.

Honestly, I wouldn't be at all opposed to them using the Halo engine for a Starcraft shooter. Ghost did before it even hit the ground, a Starcraft FPS has a ton of potential for mechanic and systems integrations.

I think halo is already the pinnacle of FPS refinement.  It's got Exactly what Fps shooters crave.

It's extremely satisfying to get kills in Halo, because there's so much timing/physicality to it, and they've paced it perfectly such that you feel in control..

Not opposed to an SC fps, but it seems pretty hard to get solid plot driven gameplay now that we've mostly seen it all.

Chyros, Tp4 doesn't think chyros set it up properly for "Peak" experience, it's a tricky engine.

The input lag and response is totally weird if any steps were missed,   it's basically beta.

From drivers, to background task, etc.

The GPU requirement is also extremely extremely high.

I been having a lot of fun on halo, I don't think it's the peak FPS right now though. I think the purest game out there with high skill margin, insane tech, movement and weapon control is probably apex legends. I think there's some complaints about tournament level gameplay but overall it seems like a pretty perfect FPS. if there's a game right now to dump all your hours into honing in your skill that would get my vote. I still hardly play it though because it takes a lot of hours to get good and I never bother to break into it. Watching my skilled friends play though is so crazy, especially when you play with them in game. The skill gap is super high.

The thing I don't like about Apex is the unnecessary complexities.

So f2p fps is designed around selling skins, and they've chosen to increase the variety of the market place by making all these different guns that do not work remarkably different from one another.   And even if they are slightly different,  the questions are <why> and <is that fun> memorizing some arbitrarily large list of gun timings/handling.

Conversely, Halo has been refined in the OTHER direction.  Bread and butter guns, not a huge variety.

I don't think Apex is a bad game, but having a mini inventory to manage is counter to fps pacing,  I want kills and I want them faster, but not so fast that I don't feel the crunch, you want a cookie that's the RIGHT thickness, not too thick, not too thin.

Apex is a middle ground to the fortnite formula,  and it feels just as messy.  There's also <like> fortnite, too much empty space/ running around.  Maybe younger gen likes this,  but as an older hughmahnn Tp4 CAN NOT STAND down time, waiting around the corner or a football field away NOT moving is a time waster, I want to be having fun, not ducking.

_Halo infinite is not without mistakes.   For a solid play experience, the Engine is just too demanding.  It was made for Next Gen,  and it wasn't designed to perform well for the F2P crowd with vanilla gpus.

TP4 am oldskool too though, right?

If you've played the likes of Quake 3, UT99, and other classic arena shooters, it should be obvious why HI is but a shadow of a game. Genuinely I don't see ANYTHING that game has going for it other than it being free. If it came out as a non-Halo title from a lesser-known developer, I doubt anyone would pay attention to it.

In many ways HI is balanced exactly like Quak.

When setup properly, the PACING of the game, between "engagement" and "reward" is very tight, and there's "just enough" to "do" where each fight feels like a chess move.

There is alot to think about when trying to win an engagement.

It also must be played as a team,  They've built this around the team dynamic.

The addition of Controller players is also unique.  Because of controller auto-aim, that makes controller players much better at snap forward engagement vs mouse players.

So a combo is Mouse player forming the back end, who can turn around faster, and aim, while a controller player takes point, because they can use auto snipe weapons more effectively.

4 different grenades, very different effect, repulsor deflection mechanic, many different mechanics that form the play pieces.

It's an extremely Deep game.

There's nothing deep about it at all and it doesn't play like Quake in the slightest! When's the last time you played Q3 that had regenerating health and a limited arsenal? :p

HI is basically a game of 2>1, aimbots, zero-damage, lame weapons with no gunplay to speak of, forced stranglehold teamplay, and REALLY ****ty maps. It's almost everything that makes Battlefield **** as well, except the environments are lamer. It's an obvious homage to the crappy level of gameplay that consoles drag us down to; the lowest common denominator made flesh in a game. Sometimes less content makes for a more focused whole, here's it's just an absence of content :p .

Calling HI deep is like calling Guitar Hero deep :p .
